ATLANTIC CITY - Atlantic City High School students Catrise Lackland and her partner Kevin Barksdale had a difficult task ahead.
Their mission: teach free enterprise principles to a group of second-graders.
"It's hard trying to get them to understand," Lackland said. "But everybody deserves a chance."
Lackland and Barksdale are members of Atlantic City High School's new award-winning chapter of DECA - Distributive Education Clubs of America - a nationwide association of hospitality management and marketing students. A partnership between the Borgata and the Board of Education funds the program.
Six of the 12 members of the local chapter are headed to DECA's national competition April 19-23 in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Lackland and Barksdale will present their work and other team members will receive leadership training.
"For a first-year chapter to have done this well is exceptional," said teacher Pam Wilson, who works with the students. Local members already have won nine awards on the regional level.
Lackland said she and Barksdale accomplished their goal through role-playing sessions at the Chelsea Heights School. The second-graders dressed up like McDonald's employees and had to deal with customer service and other issues. Both the children and the Chelsea Heights School staff loved it.
"If you look at the state standards, one major strand is career development. A lot of times our young people come out of elementary school without any idea of what they want to do or even what career opportunities are available to them at the local, national and international levels," said Chelsea Heights Principal Diane Saunders. "These type of partnerships allow our students to think in that direction and prepare themselves."
Atlantic City High School Principal LaGreta Brown also was pleased.
"I attribute the success to the students and their teacher," Brown said. "I'm proud of them. It's absolutely wonderful."
DECA falls under the high school's Academy of Hospitality and Marketing Careers, a component of the Atlantic City Jobs and Opportunities Program. The parent program was designed to provide employment for 2,000 unemployed and underemployed local residents through a commitment made to the city by Boyd Gaming and MGM Mirage, partners in the Borgata project. The Borgata is slated to open in 2003.
The Borgata program includes five components: life and employability skills training, occupational skills training, professional development, building and construction trades apprentice programs and a youth program.
"While the first four components address the employment needs of adults, we felt that it was important to focus on youth development activities to contribute to a continuous, ongoing system of workforce development in Atlantic City," said Eric Reynolds, who designed the Jobs and Opportunities program.
Subsequently what is done is that selected high schools develop a curriculum that is organized around a specific career cluster, which are like a specialized charter school. The goal is to feature a series advanced “pathway” courses that can help students to enrich their knowledge through work-based learning and academics. In turn, this specialized education will allow student to demonstrate their understanding through assessments and industry credentialing opportunities. As well these schools are enrolled in a learning exchange that have partnerships that are organized to support the programs of study by coordinating statewide networks of education partners, businesses, industry associations, labor, and other organizations (2013, p. 21-23). Consequently, the program is driven to help high school students develop a career path and to receive exploratory education that will given them an advantage in either college endeavors or in the job market.

My experience serving for Georgia Athletic Hospitality has been beneficial in my search for a career in the field of Sports Management. Through this practicum I have learned more about what it is that I want to do, and I have also learned what paths I no longer want to pursue. I am thankful for the experiences I have had. The practicum has also helped me learn how to better handle a high paced environment. I was able to network with valuable contacts and form relationships that will help me in my future. Georgia Athletic Hospitality is unique and structured organization. I will go into further detail using a SWOT analysis to show the overall position of the company. I will also analyze my own position within the company and my experience though this practicum. Lastly I want to reflect on my thoughts of the practicum and what I plan to take away from this experience.

This article is about Harrah’s Entertainment; one of the largest casino entertainments made a decision to move away from being a product based company to a strategic marketing company geared towards customer satisfaction by implementing a customer focused rewards program. Bill Harrah, the founder of the company established the company’s reputation on the premise of pride of the employees working for “the best in the business” while given more attention to the condition of the properties. However, when Gary Loveman joined the company as the new Chief operating officer, he made a move towards customer service. Gary Loveman hired Marilyn Winn, the head of Human Resources, to change how the company engaged in people development. Winn came up with a strategic plan to develop Harrah’s human capital. As a result, Winn is faced with the difficult task of improving employee motivation and job satisfaction in a rough economy after 9/11, which changed our nation forever. Although, the company gained market share it did not quite meet the company’s projected level.

In today’s society, college students are often told that we need to focus on pursuing careers that offer financial security rather than pursuing a career the we love. In the graphic novel “Johnny Bunko: The Last Career Guide You’ll Ever Need”, author Daniel Pink challenges this idea. Rather than trying to pursue a career because it makes money, the author uses characters such as Johnny’s coach, Dianne to tell us otherwise, providing six elements that will ensure you great success.
At a young age, students aspire to become doctors, lawyers, nurses, and other careers where they will become successful. However, public schools are failing to teach students the required material necessary to obtain these careers. In the documentary, Waiting for Superman, Guggenheim sheds light into the defects of American’s education system (Birtel, Chilcott, & Guggenheim, 2010). After watching this documentary, I learned that student’s dreams are jeopardized because we have not found architects who can fix our education system.
Education: In September youth will be a 5th grader at Whitney M. Young Jr School (p.s. #15).

An example of this community dynamic is the activities available for children: summer camp, sports, and involvement of the arts. These activities allow kids the opportunity to have a place to be curious and direct their energy toward a specific subject of their interest; eventually, when time does come for a child to go to college he or she will appreciate the skills developed in community colleges. Not only does Pierce provide children with a place for kids to unleash who they truly are but it allows parents of these children to facilitate the process for them. Community colleges allows parents the opportunity to take classes - like child development- to understand what specific topics their kids are thinking while exploring several subject which will potentially lead to a career. These courses provide a strong connection so when children ask their parents for guidance. Their parents will actually know what to do and will be ready to answer any question and will facilitate the process toward the pursuit of a college career. In, “The case for (community) college” by Christina Pazzanese she explains, ”I come from poverty, and I knew my parents were never going to be able to help me out with college.” (1). This piece of the article serves as Pazzanese’s hook to captivate the audience and to explain the fact that sometimes parents are not able to help

Each year education becomes more and more important in the United States. With the demand of a formal education people each day choose a career path in order to get a good employment.
