Background
Nelson was born on the 18th July, 1918. Nelson Mandela was born and raised in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, in the tiny village of Mvezo, on the banks of the Mbashe River in Transkei, South Africa. His father was chief of the village and a member of the royal family of the Thembu tribe, which spoke the Xhosa language. As a boy, Nelson grew up in the company of tribal elders and chiefs, which gave him a rich sense of African self government and heritage, despite the cruel treatment of blacks in white-governed South Africa. Mandela was married three times and had six children.

Nelson was a leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against the white minorities oppressive regime.
Nelson retired from politics in 1991. Nelson worked to ease the dangerous political differences in South Africa to try and build up the South African economy. To a remarkable degree Nelson was successful in his aims.

Nelson’s skill at building compromise and his enormous personal authority helped him lead the transition to democracy. Nelson backed the establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission which offered amnesty exemption from criminal prosecution to those who had committed crimes during the apartheid era. This action helped to promote discussion about the country's history.

Education
Nelson attended a Wesleyan mission school, the Clarkebury Boarding Institute and Wesleyan College.Nelson would later state that he achieved academic success through plain hard work.
