“Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.” (theguardian.com) Nelson Mandela was not in fact just a political leader; he was also a hero to many people all around the world by being a perfect example of leadership we need in this day and age. Nelson was willing and ready to sacrifice his life for the freedom of South Africa. Even though Mandela argued the apartheid regime left him no option but to fight violence with violence, Nelson Mandela was a great leader because he was very dedicated to provide freedom and an end to segregation to the people of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18th, 1918 in South Africa. At age 10, he moved to the Great Place, a school in Mqekezweni. He was always determined to do what he set out to do, and he was not going to give up. In 1994, four years after he was released from prison, Mandela was elected as the first black president in South Africa. Nelson being elected was an amazing accomplishment in the fight for equality. Although the majority of South Africa’s population was black, he had grown up in a country where blacks were denied basic rights, let alone being elected president. Having dealt with ending the apartheid regime without violence, Nelson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. Receiving the prize he said, “This must be a world of democracy and respect for human rights, a world freed from the horrors of poverty, hunger, deprivation and ignorance, relieved of the threat and the scourge of civil wars and external aggression and unburdened of the great tragedy of millions forced to become refugees.”(act.mtv.om) In 1995, he opened the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.
