Neil Armstrong: The Man of Hopes and Dreams
When the space race began in the 1900s, the United States of America was competing against Russia to excel in space exploration. They wanted to be the first to fly in space, first people in space, and especially first to go to the moon. The man that achieved this was Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. He is honored and remembered by this legendary space walk but many people overlook his many other important life achievements.
Born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Neil lived with his mother, Viola, his father, Stephen, and his two younger siblings, June and Dean Armstrong. Neil’s father was an auditor for the Ohio state government, and his mother was a stay-at home mom. The family moved around the state repeatedly after Neil’s birth, and during this time Neil began to love airplanes, and flying. He would read aviation magazines, build airplane models, was active in Boy Scouts, and he took his first airplane ride when he was six years old.
