On average users between the ages of 18-34 spend four hours on social media (cite it). It might seem like four hours are not a lot, but it is a lot of time. There are many things these young people could be doing, like working on their writing or communication skills. Social media are websites and applications that enable users to create and share context or to participate in social networking. Some examples of social media are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Snap chat and much more. Every two years, or so, a new form of social media comes out. There are ways users can access their accounts through their computers, smartphones, IPods, IPads, tablets and other forms of electronic devices. Professor Chanel Ward, in the Black Studies department at SUNY New Paltz believes social media is, “the platform to share and connect cross the world”, meaning it open users to current events. They are updated with what going on and when having a conversation its helps them present themselves in a stronger way. According to Clinical Report- The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families, “ Engaging in various forms of social media is a routine activity that research has shown to benefit children and adolescents by enhancing communication, social connection, and even technical skills” (800), meaning social media is beneficial. Others say social media is a way of connecting with family members in different state or country and in maintaining long distance relationships. To start with, as Professor Ward explained, social media is the platform of connecting which, means almost everyone is on social media. They spend a large amount of time during the day on social media. When asked freshman college students, how long do they spend on social media in a day, many did not even know how long. The fact being that they are checking their account on the computer or phones like every five minutes. It like a habit they have to be checking what going on social media, the idea that they need to constantly check. When writing on social media everyone should be aware of what they are posting because colleges and employers are searching people up. The way you write on social media can depend if you get the internship, accepted to the college or even a job. Social media can be the reason, why many do not get the chance to experience many internships and jobs. As stated from Ms. Johnson, president of New York- based Women for Hire Inc., in the article Thx for IView! I Wud <3 to Work 4 U!! ;), “ That email just ruined it for me, this look like a text message” (1). This shows how employers look at possible employees writing, especially in young adults.
