Externalities in economics is something that happens in everyday life that people don’t usually pay too much attention to, but can affect the economy. An externality can be described as a third party that is affected by the transaction of someone else. Externalities can be either negative or positive, but most of the time is seen as negative. An example of a negative externality from the homework would be someone buys a pack of cigarettes and smoke it. A bystander, who in this situation is a third party, inhales the cigarette smoke and therefore their health is affected by secondhand smoke. A positive externality from the homework would be that my neighbor plants flowers in between our houses and now I find our driveway more appealing. If some …show more content…

The reason that this one is different is because all the other examples have a negative effect on the people around them (for example, secondhand smoke, noisy neighbors, car exhaust, etc.) which causes them a great deal of inconvenience to third parties around them, whereas with the example chosen, people (myself) who get to see the flowers are positively affected by how beautiful they look in the driveway. For this example of an externality, the way the government would approach the situation would be different from all the other examples. In this case, instead of putting a tax on the product (ie. the flowers), the government may consider regulating it differently. The government may notice that beautiful flowers have a positive effect on the citizens and therefore they may increase the amount of flowers around town by planting more or encouraging the citizens to plant more flowers in their yards. The most efficient way to regulation this situation would be for the government to promoting to the citizens that a green planet is good and by having more flowers, plants and trees planted in peoples’ yards, the more they are helping the Earth. This way, the government does not necessarily need to go out of their way to plant flowers in everyone’s yard (which would cost the government money and may cause some dissatisfaction to some people) and it also gives the people a sense of personal choice about whether or not they want to help the earth or not.
