The Truth about Video Games and Violence As we evolve into a more advanced species, so does our technology, and along with our overly advanced technology, comes video games. They’ve have certainly come a long way since they were first introduced to the main stream audience and have been slowly creeping its way into many daily lives, making them a lot more entertaining and less dull. Video games’ one and only purpose is to entertain. However, it is indeed true that everything is fun and games until somebody gets hurt, and that is exactly what has happened over the years in video games. If video games were the cause of violence, then it would be common sense that an increase total sale of video games would increase the total number of crimes, would it not? Yet, according to ProCon, a nonpartisan, nonprofit, California-based websites that present research, pro and con statements, and studies on questions related to all debates, the total sales of video games hardware and software combined had a 204% increase from 1994 to 2014, while violent crimes had a 37% decrease in the exact same period of time. Living in today’s society, it is common sense that teenagers are the most likely to play video games, which would also be logical that an increase total sale of video games would cause teen violence to catapult. However, ProCon presented data from the National Center for Education Statistics, showing an overall 18% decrease in high school students who had been in at least one physical fight. There’s a common saying that numbers don’t lie; in this case, instead of skyrocketing as to how they were supposed to due to an extreme increase of video games sales, these numbers have plunged, which would discredit the claim of teen violence due to video
This study occurred in the University of Oxford and the University of Rochester with the purpose of examining the effects of video games by having volunteers play a range of different video games while the researchers altered the difficulty of the games. The objective of this experiment was to prove whether or not difficult, but not necessarily violent, video games can lead to spikes in one’s aggression. The result? When a participant in the study could not master the games control in about twenty minutes, increased levels of aggression would often follow, no matter if the participant partook in a violent game or not. In hopes of shedding light on this new hypothesis, scientists conducted an experiment where volunteers played a game known as Half Life 2; however, the game was modified into several different versions. One, being violent, had the participants shoot at monster-like creatures, while the other, instead of shooting, had players tag the creatures causing them to “gently” evaporate (Vincent). Whether or not the player participated in the violent version of Half Life 2 was irrelevant, yet whether or not the contributor got to see the tutorial effected their aggression. The co-author of this study, Richard M. Ryan, came to the conclusion that “aggression stems from feeling not in control or incompetent while playing. If the structure of a game or the design of the controls thwarts enjoyment, it is this, not the violent content, that seems to drive feelings of aggression” (Vincent). Generating 11.7 billions of dollars of sells every year or more, the video game industry is considered one of the largest industries in this century. However, video games have been a topic of controversy. With the sales of violent video games going up and the increased violence in schools and teenagers, video games are always to blame. Many people speculate that video games are the cause on why many teenagers have developed aggressive and violent behavior, are desensitize to violence, and the increase violence in schools and public places. In contradiction, video games have little or no fault in teenagers’ violent behavior and shouldn’t always be blamed.

People have always been looking for a reason why horrible things happen. The media is quick to blame video games as the target and cause of many shootings that have occurred, ever since Columbine and Quake. People have been blaming video games for violence for years now, ever since violent video games have been made. News reports blame video games more and more for each shooting, telling the public how this person played video games for x amount of hours a day, and that video games caused him or her to shoot people, and how video games encourage and reward violence. Anti-video game lobbyists have been campaigning to have violence removed from video games, citing resources that they themselves have created as reasons for such, poorly done studies where they confirm that kids are more aggressive through how much hot sauce they put on someone’s fries. While unbiased studies of video games and their links to violence are hard to come by, recent research has shown that video games do not in fact have a casual link to violence, and may even have the opposite effect. Violent video games have nearly no link to violence in teens or adults.
Do video games cause violence? Violence in our real world caused by playing a video game that has guns in it or even death. Some people say they do and others don't. Here are my three reasons why video games do not, have not, and will not cause violence.
Although video games can have no urges in young adults and children to commit violent crimes because most all video games are fictional and not based on real life events or moments in history .An example to prove this is “We found that game sales related to a decrease in crimes, and especially violent crimes.” (Carey). An example of how video games can have negative effects on the people who do play the violent games is “In surveys about 80% of High School age boys say they play video games most of which are thought to be violent” (Carey). The quote taken from a survey can tell us that the 80 percent of high school age students that play video games can be connected to the non-fictional aspect of the game by the students committing the crimes or violent actions because of the misconnection between real and fake, so they are then to commit more violent actions in the future. I am focusing on violent video games and how they affect juveniles because I feel that this issue needs to be looked at in the criminal justice community.
