Women who work night shift have a higher risk of developing cancer, specifically breast cancer. According to the article “Night Shift Work Increases the Risks of Multiple Primary Cancers in Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 61 Articles,” for every 5 years of night shift work, the risk of breast cancer in women increases by 3.3% (Yuan, X., Zhu, C., Wang, M., Mo, F., Du, W., & Ma, X., 2018). Overall, the risk for breast cancer is roughly 32% greater for those who work night shift compared to those who work day shift (American Association for Cancer Research, 2018). Breast cancer is not the only cancer that is at an increased risk due to working night shift. Nurses who work night shift have a 58% higher risk of developing breast cancer, 35% chance of gastrointestinal cancer, and a 28% chance of lung cancer (American Association for Cancer Research, 2018).
