As a growing medium, video games are often associated with various negative connotations that have obfuscated its positive contributions made to society. As a result, the general public is unaware of how video games have shaped modern-day, some even consider it a meaningless teenager pastime, but this is distant from reality. Video games are important to society at large because they do not serve for entertainment purposes only, they are a major force in the economy, scientific research, and military training. The video game industry has come a long way since its birth in the 1970’s, research from Jules Gray, a journalist for worldfinance.com, states the video game industry is now worth around $80 billion US dollars, undoubtedly classifying…show more content…

Recently, scientific researchers have used video game technology to train scientists and or allow them to visualize data they would otherwise be lacking profound understanding of. For example, in his article “Video Game Technology Advances Cancer Research” Doctor Rick Nauert writes “researchers at Wake Forest University are using graphics processing units (GPUs), the technology that makes video game images so realistic, to simulate the inner workings of human cells”, this gives scientists “a far more accurate view of how the molecule functions. This, in turn, can allow the development of new medications that can block the action of the enzyme and potentially stop the growth of cancerous cells” (Video Game Technology Advances Cancer Research). Without GPU technology developed by the video game industry, programming the simulation would have been a much more laborious task. For these researchers, less time programming and more time observing simulations that help them develop drugs to save lives is a fantastic idea. Another field that is being revolutionized by video games is Economics. The creation of massively multiplayer games has resulted in the emergence of complex virtual economies where trade, assets and production exists, similar to the real world.
