Cellular phones have become an important item and a part of everyday life for many Americans. Most Americans rely heavily on them to perform their daily activities. Cellular phones have evolved in such a rapid rate they have gone beyond an electronic item for making calls. Cell phone are used for email, send text messages, surf the internet, and perform several different tasks. It is unfortunate that many of these daily activities occur while a person is driving. Drivers persist on texting not only are placing themselves in danger but also everyone else around them. Texting and driving is one of the largest epidemics to hit our nation despite the fact that texting while driving has played a factor in many car accidents and fatalities. The progression of text messaging, with more capable phones and larger numbers of people engaging than ever before, has turned into one of the largest distractions in our world. People are constantly fixated on their phones, checking Twitter, Facebook and text messages. The use of a cell phone while driving is extremely distracting and dangerous to the person behind the wheel, and everyone else on the road as well. Every year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of using their cell phone while behind the wheel. This statistic is expected to grow as much as 4% every year. But, this is not just a problem among teen drivers. The Bluetooth capability in cars gives a driver a hands-free way to talk on the phone, but is still not completely safe (8). Also, only 1 out of 3 US cars sold in 2009 had this feature. New systems are being developed that will use Bluetooth as well a global positioning technology to allow parents to monitor cell phone use and texting while driving (10).
