Implementing a school dress code has both positive and negative effects on the students following the limiting rules. Dress code can affect students attitudes, personality, motivation, stress level, and influences in numerous ways. The effects it can have on a person vary in both good and bad ways. While possibly fixing a person attitude and negative traits it may also alter one 's personality.
Over time there has been arguments and court cases discussing the fairness and constitutionality of this movement. Dress codes and hair regulations have increased a great deal over time leading to more arguments over the controversy. Educators refuse to agree on the benefits of having a dress code within schools. Another topic worth discussion is the dress code implemented in schools and if it is a good idea to have it. Most school officials and directors agree that it is a good idea to implement dress codes because it can prevent certain situations and make the learning process easier. Many schools chose to go with a stern dress code rather than a uniform. The article questions if this is a better plan or if uniforms make things easier in the long run. Many students will tell you that no dress code is needed at all but to create an appropriate learning environment some rules towards student dress are necessary. The problems with a dress code that may occur are vague descriptions, loopholes, and somewhat sexist comments. These comments are not aimed to be sexist, but can be portrayed that way due to the nature of the topic.
For example: In many schools girls feel they are more strictly limited than the boys in the school.

This article was worth my time because it expanded my view of dress codes and the reasons they are established. It did not change my view per say, but I see now how at times they are necessary until deeper, more thorough changes can be made, especially when student 's lives are at stake. Mumford High School was the first school in Detroit to enforce a dress code in 1986. Many think that a stronger dress code will help students focus in school, but the way a student dresses does not determine a student’s willingness to learn or the teacher’s ability to capture the student’s attention. Also, adults argue that high school is a teenager’s job; therefore, they should dress professionally. However, Elizabeth Forward does not have a policy against sweatpants, sweatshirts, or athletic attire, which are much more unprofessional than tank tops or destroyed denim. I think that the dress code policies should be relaxed to a more lenient state given the temperature of the building throughout the school year, the change in long-term trends among teenagers, and the level of hypocrisy illustrated between the relationship of school’s administration and the dress code policy.
The author continues to explain the two points he learned, and because of those points, he made his school a casual place. Not only that, but in High School there is large groups of gangs, and they can’t wear clothing that represents them and wear anything offensive, because then less violence will occur.

Every year parents, students and teachers argue about the issue of applying school uniform, and if it is going to be put into effect or not. Each year, school dress code is being pushed away. Year after year, to help stop violent behavior and encourage order in schools, dress codes are applied. Does the fact of students having to wear a certain dress code reduce the violent behavior and encourage order in schools? (“The Controversial School Uniforms and School Dress Code Debate”, 2008). Research shows, that dress code policies may increase the chance of a child safety in school by a very low percentage, but that still affects the child in a positive way (“Do uniforms make schools better?”, 2004).
The first dress code was sent to be decided by the Supreme Court. The problem was that students were protesting against the Vietnam War by wearing black wristbands which educators thought to be disrupting to the classroom. However, these codes help prepare kids for the real world where they must dress to the appropriate attire. Research shows, that students learn better when there is a dress code in place and the staff says many students are less worried about what they are wearing and focusing more on completing their school work. Dress codes also introduce a healthy learning environment for kids and help reduce violence. Other statistics have changes as well. Attendance has gone up and gang violence has gone down. Some students are feeling uncomfortable and are saying students are going to have to start dressing the same due to the dress code. By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved. A dress code will enforce discipline toward learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student’s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike.

Schools all over the world have created and enforced dress codes. Some schools are more relaxed than others; however, they all share the common theme of regulating what students can and cannot wear during the school day. But what happens when the latest fashion trends completely compromise the implemented dress code? That is the problem student’s-particularly young women- are facing in today’s society. The overwhelming increase in dress code violations has brought to light another issue associated with the codes: sexism. More and more, young women are being targeted and punished for dress code violations. While this may be due to the fact that fashion in today’s society is all about tight clothes, it could also lead to more long-lasting and sinister consequences. The rules set in place by schools prevent students and teachers from being “offended” or “distracted” by what these girls are wearing; however, this also lends to rape culture and making girls believe it is their fault if they receive unwanted male attention, as well as leading boys to think their behavior is okay. Dress codes send the message that it is a girl’s fault of anything bad happens to her due to her “suggestive” clothing.
