College classroom incivility refers to some form of disruptive behavior which shows disrespect or disregard for the trainer and fellow students. Classroom courtesy has been declining over the years to the point where the mood in the college classroom has greatly changed. It is common to hear tenured and untenured college instructors complaining about the misconduct of students in their classes both at undergraduate and graduate levels. The problem is that, even the mildest form of incivility has significant negative impacts on the learning process and the retention of students. When students engage in disruptive behavior like answering phone calls in class, they waste a lot of their valuable time and also interfere with the learning process of those around them. They also reduce the chances of engaging in meaningful classroom discussions through productive dialogues. This paper seeks detailed insight on college classroom incivility.

When one allows some form of behavior to thrive in the classroom without proper guidance, it quickly develops into unacceptable behavior. It is better to prevent classroom incivility than to deal with the consequences later on. The instructors can incorporate their expectations of behavior in the class syllabus and revisit them from time to time. These may include class attendance, lateness, and use of laptops during class, and side talking. Clear policies should be set regarding the punishments for breaking any of the set rules. The institution’s code of conduct and the penalties for grave breaches should also be included so that students are aware of the policies and the expectations of the institution (Miller et al.

If students engage in misbehaviour, they receive a warning and are then sent to the timeout desk to reflect and write in the timeout book.

In my article I read it discusses how incivility is a big problem in higher education. Incivility is a serious issue that needs to be talked about more in our society. The negative impact that incivility brings is educators cannot preform their best in teaching duties, disruption of the learning process and the classroom learning environment, and the deterioration of the faculty – student relationship. I have seen incivility all through when I was in grade school and even in college affecting many students and their education. Seeing staff members abuse their power over students has stopped many students from being successful. Seeing faculty members have clicks as if they were in High School is utterly ridiculous.
Consequences given for disrespect and cheating does not require students to reflect on their choices to make better ones. Instructors taking preventive measures and giving students harsher consequences could reduce the percent of people cheating. Students feel that being disrespectful to their instructors and sometimes peers will earn laughs, popularity, and attention without realizing the potential outcome.
