Bullying is a serious problem that is overwhelming schools across the world. Bullying has damaging effects on children, both physical and psychological. Bullying can be defined as an “unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time” (Stop Bullying). The issue of bullying is still present throughout schools today. Bullying can take several different shapes or forms. Some ways that bullying takes place may not be visible to others, while other times it can be noticeable. “In order to be considered bullying, the behavior must be aggressive and include an imbalance of power and repetition” (Stop Bullying).…show more content…
“Children who were bullied are more likely to experience depression and anxiety” (Stop Bullying). Some of the other effects of being bullied include “increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating patterns, and loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy” (Stop Bullying). These issues do not stop at childhood and may continue throughout their adulthood and be life long. Children who are bullied are “more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school” (Stop Bullying). Those who have been emotionally or physically harmed by a bully need to be taken care of. Some of the ways we can support the victim is to” listen and focus on the child and learn what’s been going on and show you want to help, assure the child that bullying is not their fault, know that kids who are bullied may struggle with talking about it, and give advice about what to do” (Stop bullying). It is easy to make mistakes when giving advice to a victim of bullying. When offering advice, try to avoid certain things. These include “telling the child to ignore the bullying, do not blame the child for being bullied, and do not tell the child to physically fight back against the kid who is bullying” (Stop Bullying). It is important to do a follow-up with the victim after the issue has been resolved. This shows commitment to make the bullying stop, because it is behavior that is not justified (Stop Bullying). Making sure the victim of bullying has the appropriate support is a key step to stop
