When it comes to the debate of Nature vs. Nurture I consider myself to be the middle man. I feel that our behavior, physical development and our identity is not only the result of our genealogical makeup but our interactions, and decisions that we encounter on a daily basis as well as our family structure. First I would like to give a brief summary of the two topics. The nature side of the debate expresses that our decisions and end results are stemmed from only our genealogical make up such as, hair color and even diseases. Nurture on the other hand is the actualization that our actions and decisions are brought upon us not by our DNA makeup but actually from the environment around us, including our culture and upbringing. Although this may seem as if DNA plays the biggest part in forming your identity you should think again. Many teenagers form their own identities by putting themselves into different situations and figuring out which path will have the greatest outcome (Myers, 2014, p. 144). Although we cannot rule out DNA when we try to form our identities most people will argue that many teens do not just automatically know who they want to be. They begin to form themselves and create their own person by referring to the actions and identities of the people surrounding them, which leads me to the topic of family …show more content…

When you look in a mirror what do you see? You don’t see the words caring, nice, tall and happy, do you? No. This is because your physical appearance, although it can be medically altered, is created when your parents DNA are combined together, which is why you can see characteristics from both parents when you do look in the mirror (nature). Now although you may see those characteristics, there is also a side of you that may only be the result of prior actions (nurture). Some of these characteristics may include having muscles or having a healthy diet, these traits are based more so on how your surroundings are affecting you (Myers, 2014, p. 150-151). For instance, maybe you had a family member diagnosed with diabetes and they were told to watch their eating habits, because of this you may have begun eating healthy as well since you could already be carrying the gene you may not want to risk the chance of getting diagnosed as well.
