Natty Bumppo’s Greatest of American Heroes
Hero defines a person who might be considered valiant, brave, noble, and a person of quality. A hero is usually self- confident and decisive. A heroic person’s actions can positively impact other people; the hero acts because it is the right thing to do. Sometimes, it can be doing the wrong thing for the right reason. Often times, it’s difficult to try to do what’s right for a person when the person can’t see the final outcome. Natty Bumppo would be considered an American hero because he has all of these qualities. Four specific examples of Natty Bumppo’s heroic characteristics are honor, self-confidence, valiance, and sagacity.
Wherever he traveled in the frontier with his companions, he honored the traditions of both whites and Indians. Natty Bumppo treated everyone cordially. He did not want to be involved in either side of the war because he didn’t want to fight over the land; land did not belong to anyone. He didn’t kill just for sport, but for foods or self- defense. When he did kill, Natty paid respect to both the deer and the Indian for the loss of their lives. Honor is an important characteristic of both a hero and Natty Bumppo.
Another quality that describes Natty Bumppo as a hero is self-confidence. Self confidence is believing in oneself and one’s abilities. Natty Bumppo does have self- confidence wherever he goes and believes in himself. There are a few examples of self- confidence that Natty Bumppo displays in the movie, The Last of the Mohicans. Natty
