Nationalism and imperialism played a big role in Pre World War One, with every country priding themselves domestically. This caused controversy within countries, and it also created alliances, eventually leading up to WW1.

Nationalism means is a country that feels they have superiority over other countries.In document one, a British imperial poet talks about how citizens should praise their own country, and that nationalism is for the greater cause of the country. In document 6, Count Cavour, explains “The history of every age proves that no people can attain a high degree of intelligence and morality unless its feeling of nationality is strongly developed.” As nationalism was growing in Europe, it gave many citizens in different countries confidence for their military strength, and government. Imperialism means extending a country's power in military force, in this case, colonization. Many European powers colonized in different places, especially Africa. In document 7, a octopus man is in England, grabbing different places in Europe such as, Egypt, India, Cape Colony, etc. This is showing that England's had great imperial power before WW1. In document 3, John Stuart Mill states that, “There needs be no hesitation in affirming that Colonization, in the present state of the world, is the best affair of business, in which the capital of an old and wealthy country can engage.” Because of this many countries tried to use imperial power to make their country more tradable and profitable.
