The first arrested student was a Virginia Tech Engineering student named David Eisenhauer who had some kind of a relationship with a 13 year old middle schooler, Nicole Lovell. Natalie Keepers was the second student who was arrested for helping with the murder. She was an outstanding student with excellent grades and extracurricular activities, who also does not have a delinquent background. Most people don 't look at every aspect of a crime. They don 't think about everyone that was affected, other than the victim. In her article "On Punishment and Teen Killers", Jennifer Jenkins explains how her younger sister was taken from her by a murderer who shot and killed her. In her article she states, "So few who work on the juvenile offender side can truly understand what the victims of their crimes sometimes go through. Some never recover." Jenkins is explaining her personal experience of losing her younger sister to help others understand what the families of the victim have to deal with for the rest of their lives. She brings a point of view that most people have never been in because they 've never experienced what it 's like to have a loved one taken away from you by murder. In her story she also states, "If brain development were the reason, then teens would kill at roughly the same rates all over the world." Many people believe that the supreme court needs to be more lenient on juveniles because their brain is not fully developed as that of an adult, but brain development cannot be used as an excuse because as Jenkins explains, the teens would be killing at the same rate all over the world. Jenkins also brings up a good point about how the US as a whole needs to step up to prevent these crimes from happening. Jenkins states, "We in America have to own to this particular problem, with weapons so easily available to our youth, and the violence-loving culture we raise them. She is trying to bring awareness to society that America is also at fault for these crimes. Furthermore, she also explains why life sentencing is not as cruel as some may feel it is when she says, "… a life sentencing still allows a great deal of good living to be done, even from behind bars, far more than these teen killers gave to our murdered love
The offender was her ex-husband. He monitored her coming and going and wouldn’t let her talk on the phone. Everything in his opinion was stupid, including the victim and her family. His mentality of life forced her into a constant struggle. Her days consisted of trying to fix things to meet his high level of expectations. Everything snowballed and escalated from there. The be it all was his threat to kill her. After she heard the threat it was difficult for her to put on her social face outside. It became difficult for her to go home because she feared for her life. Work and church were comfortable settings because no one would harm her. When she would get in her car to go home, she would have panic attacks. She defined her life after the death threat as “looking in from the outside”. She uses that phrase because by the time he threatened her she pushed everyone in her life to the side. She was too far into the relationship to see that he was an improper companion. Those times were difficult and lonely for her to get through. The reason she was with him was her belief that domestic violence wouldn’t happen to her. She thought it would happen to someone else with a different background or a movie star. One moment she was mad for allowing the abuse to continue for so long. A horrific murder happened in tiny Skidmore on December of 2004. Lisa Montgomery and Bobbi Jo Stinnett met and found out that they had much in common and became good friends (Nunes 85-86). Surprisingly, Bobbi and Lisa met in an internet chat room. Bobbi was into puppy breeding and she occasionally served as a judge. Lisa lived in Kansas where her close friends were shocked about what she was talking about. Of course, Lisa shrugged it off and she sent an email to Bobbi saying that she wanted to see the puppies (Nunes 85-86). When Lisa met Bobbi Jo she had a fake name which was Darlene Fisher because she didn’t want Bobbi to know her real identity. When Lisa sent Bobbi the email she had a criminal intent on her mind. Ashley Davis is a 14 year-old, brown-skinned, African-American, masculine presenting female. Ashley’s mother reports that patient is defiant, especially toward her and other authority figures. Mother reports that Ashley’s behavior disrupts the family, her ability to achieve in school and has landed her in legal trouble. Mother reports that the Ashley began to exhibit sexually promiscuous behavior starting as early as 9 years old. Her reason for referral and placement on the unit was due to Ashley’s mother, finding her and her twin brother naked together in a sexualized position, all while trying to record this interaction. When the mother questioned both Ashley and her brother, it seemed as though the Ashley was the aggressor.
Gacy had previously been convicted for committing “deviant sex acts” and sentenced to ten years at the Iowa State Men’s Reformatory at Anamosa. Gacy had a psychological evaluation done while serving time and this evaluation was part of his permanent record on file at the Iowa Department of Corrections. Gacy was viewed as a model prisoner and as a result he was paroled after serving eighteen months. After Gayc’s release an inmate came forward to report that Gacy sexually assaulted him while incarcerated. Gacy was friendly with prison staff which is what caused the inmate to wait to report the assault until after Gacy’s release (Stevens, 2004). They were enjoying a New Year’s Eve party when she and her husband received a call from a house they are watching while the owners were away. The owners f the house son also through a New Years Eve party and her husband and a friend went to go check on him. While they were there the husband died from multiple kicks to the head which was stated in the autopsy. No information was given that night from the people who attended that party which made it difficult for police to prosecute. Five years later a young man named Ryan Aldridge was arrested for the murder of Katy's husband. When she found out she wanted answers as to why and what happened in his life for him to make the life decision for both of them. She didn’t want revenge but wanted to hug him when they first met. She worried about him while he was in jail and taught herself about the justice system regarding his case. Ryan served here three out of five years in jail and that prices Katys visited him and did a process called victim-offender mediation this took an entire day. During this time, they both found humanity and the both began to understand each other and realized they had things in common. They worked together after he got out of jail sharing each other’s story. She states the fact that Ryan is in capable of inflicting harm is what she wanted. Easy, is to ignore or neglect the true pain patients experience in times of crisis. As caregivers I believe we all want to heal others or we wouldn’t be in the field of nursing, but there are only handfuls willing to be present during the healing process because sharing one’s pain hurts. As a surgical nurse, I find being genuinely present takes hard work on my behalf, not only mentally but emotionally. On a unit where patient’s needs and conditions are changing at astonishing rates, being present requires mental strength in order slow down enough to recognize the value presence
There are many who believe that the next shortage will be worse and the demand for nurses will increase. There will be more jobs available especially with the baby boomer nurses retiring. Wood believes that when nurses retire, the next shortage could be even worse than the previous shortage. According to Wood this would lead to an “intellectual drain of institutional and professional nursing knowledge” (Wood, 2011, para 15). Overall, The Sakia Gunn story was extremely heart breaking for me to watch. I honestly fought back tears as I watched it with the class. The fact that Sakia was murder because she was lesbian is disturbing in itself but watching and learning that she was only fifteen years old and killed by a grown man approximately thirty years old and at least twice her size made this even more disturbing. I feel like McCullough did not receive enough prison time to his sentence. Twenty years is way too easy for him. He deserved life in prison at the least. McCullough made a decision to murder Sakia Gunn, a five foot three-inch-tall teenager and his family and defense attorney kept saying he made a mistake. Not only was McCullough wrong for propositioning teenage girls, but he could have easily avoided this “mistake” by taking no as an answer. Rosa Lee Cunningham is a 52-year old African American female. She is 5-foot-1-inch, 145 pounds. Rosa Lee is married however, is living separately from her husband. She has eight adult children, Bobby, Richard, Ronnie, Donna (Patty), Alvin, Eric, Donald (Ducky) and one child who name she did not disclose. She bore her eldest child at age fourteen and six different men fathered her children. At Rosa Lee’s recent hospital admission to Howard University Hospital emergency room blood test revealed she is still using heroin. Though Rosa Lee recently enrolled in a drug-treatment program it does not appear that she has any intention on ending her drug usage. When asked why she no longer uses heroin she stated she doesn’t always have the resources to support her addiction. Rosa Lee is unemployed and receiving very little in government assistance. The primary diagnosis for Amanda Anderson is separation anxiety disorder (SAD) with a co-morbidity of school phobia. Separation anxiety disorder is commonly the precursor to school phobia, which is “one of the two most common anxiety disorders to occur during childhood, and is found in about 4% to 10% of all children” (Mash & Wolfe, 2010, p. 198). Amanda is a seven-year-old girl and her anxiety significantly affects her social life. Based on the case study, Amanda’s father informs the therapist that Amanda is extremely dependent on her mother and she is unenthusiastic when separated from her mother. Amanda was sitting on her mother’s lap when the therapist walked in the room to take Amanda in her office for an interview (Morgan, 1999, p. 1).
