English, it’s one of those required general education courses that we are required to take if we want to graduate. ENC1143 Rhetoric and Narrative is one of those classes. Some would have picked it on their own; I am not one of those people though. English is not one of the most enjoyable subjects for me, mainly because it is not one of my stronger subjects. After trying several times to get out of taking this course, this being my fourth English class because I transferred from another university that required other English courses I still had to take it. I say this because out of all fourth English classes that I have taken thus far including this one I actually believe that this English course has been that one that I have learned the most from even with …show more content…
The trend in my group was that everyone was acknowledging all of the good things about each persons writing but not really giving any criticism that each piece of writing could improve on. Looking back at some of the comments on my Summary two, they went into depth about some of the things they liked about it but gave very brief information on what could be improved. My comments that I commented on some of my peer’s summaries were also that way where I gave more positive feedback then negative feedback for improvement. As the semester went on and peers got more comfortable with giving peer criticism realizing that it was a very helpful tool the comments started giving more comments for improvement instead of just focusing on what they liked about the summaries. Which in turn even though as we got more in depth in the course work and our writing was supposed to improve, the peer comments for criticism improved as well helping improve our grades for final
Narrative research is a qualitative methodological approach in research (Bedford & Landry, 2010. Since the early 1980s, narrative inquiry has been emerging in regards to individual life stories. Storytelling is closely related to psychoanalytic tradition. Narrative research, consist of a multiple of approaches, that are apart of social constructionism, which is guided by the philosophical assumptions of an interpretive constructivist paradigm (Patsiopoulos & Buchanan, 2011). Through this qualitative method researchers are able to explore and obtain an understanding about individuals through specific data gathered through interviews.
Taking ENC 1101 this fall has taught me a few valuable components in regards to composition and college life. These past few months I have learned how to participate in an argument, source my research using MLA format and how crucially important it is to submit assignments ahead of time.
Before I started this class I never knew what sociology was. I thought I knew, but I actually didn’t. I thought it was some boring study about the society that we live in, but I was proven wrong by this course. Through many different concepts taught I have been able to understand what sociology really is, and how to apply it to my daily life. There were many topics that we talked about in class that I can apply to my life be it school, work, home. Some of the many topics we talked about that really spoke to me were sexuality, race, and gender.
Taking ENC 1101 has taught me how to properly format an issue, cite sources, and use grammar. In this class, we spent time on in class writing, project essays, peer reviews, oral presentations, blog posts, group summary presentations and questions, rhetorical analysis, and a research paper. Many of my papers we wrote were about social and ethical issues of our society. These papers have taught me a lot about the world around us. Some topics of my papers included: abortion, women’s appearance in society, cigarette smoking, etc. About every other week, Professor Knutsen made us do in class writing. These writing were about different
Initial Reflective Essay When I first thought of what I wanted to do with my life after college, the first thing I thought of was helping people. The next step in deciding what I wanted to do with my life was to examine how I could accomplish this goal. I started pondering and I was thinking about how much I love to take care of my body. Health care and personal hygiene has always been an important factor in my life. So I decided to major in Health Sciences.
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
My portfolio will demonstrate the skills and writing techniques I have developed and honed while taking the course English 1010 at the University of Memphis. Some of the techniques and skills I have learned include how to write with different persuasive strategies on the audience and how to incorporate critical thinking into my work. As well as these skills I have learned how to apply an effective composing process to my writing and have fine tuned my writing abilities. Writing with different styles on different topics has improved the way I approach writing papers. These styles helped me learn quickly, therefore making me a better writer and student at the same time.
Reflection involves stages of critically analysing experiences of practice in order to elucidate, examine, assess, and so inform learning about practice (Reid, 1993). Boyd and Fayles (1983) conceptualised reflective learning as the skills acquired by an individual to internally inspect and investigate an area of concern that is most likely provoked by an experience to generate and explain its meaning in relations of self, which may lead to an outcome of an improved theoretical perception. Both of the definitions give a clear definition to view reflection both as an approach to gain knowledge and as an approach to improve practice (Schutz, 2007). Moreover, Boyd and Fayles (1983) stressed that this improvement may be entirely established on an individual’s personal level of involvement. The evolution of Western philosophy involves the reflection as a notion (Schutz, 2007). In addition, Scutz (2007) suggested that the practice of reflection approaches plays a significant role in educating nursing undergraduates and health care experts to incorporate the skills of reflection in their practice communities as part of their daily practice at work.
I have learned a wide variety of material in this class. My critical thinking, research writing, and digital writing skills have all improved, as a result of this class. Throughout this eight week course, I have not only enhanced my overall writing skills, but I have also learned how to identify, and use reliable sources to my advantage. I have done so, all while giving the proper credit where it is due. My portfolio will include much of the material I did in this class. From my essay collection, to a few of my discussion posts, each given assignment helped me expand on my writing and improve my overall skills. Before this course, I was never familiar with the American Psychological Association format of writing, also known as APA style. This course helped me learn the specific APA style, as well as enhance my general ability of the MLA style. One specific site that I used to my advantage, is Owl Purdue Online Writing Lab. This source offers reliable guidelines to completing various educational
As I sit here and ponder over the last semester, I smile remembering what my thoughts were before I started. I was excited thinking about joining this semester, noticing that I had English 111 as one of my courses. This will be a breeze I thought. Writing and I go together hand in hand well, and I bet this will be one of my favorite courses that I’ll ace with flying colors. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I think that was because I didn’t realize what all goes into writing. I have always been homeschooled and never had to write very many essays, although I loved writing. It all changed when I joined this semester and got to write three entirely different essays. I remember almost being in tears, looking at the highlights, when my first essay came back. I smile now, realizing that I never realized all the small little details that are easily overlooked that goes into writing. I don’t think I could have gotten through this semester without “The Little Sea Gull” handbook and the patience and help of Mrs. Wisdom.
Thirty years ago, (August 17, 1987), I enter the Dallas Accounting Center in Renaissance Tower ready to make my mark on the world as an Accountant I at Mobil Oil Corporation. Invited to interviewed with multiple departments, my eyes were set on working in the Joint Interest Accounting Group , affectionately known as the Country Club Group. When I showed up to work on Monday, my position was not in Joint Interest Accounting but just across the aisle in Audits & Receivables (Not the country club group!).
My portfolio absolutely reflects my understanding of persuasive writing. Persuasive writing is the ability to use certain word choices in order to convince an audience to agree, or a least grasp, the topic that is being written about. My portfolio represents the goals and objectives of persuasive writing. The essays I have written for this course demonstrate that I have certainly developed my critical thinking skills, and also developed, or better yet, mastered my communication and personal responsibility skills; but, because terms of my lack of paraphrasing and analysis, my writing process is not perfected.
I created the story of trying to pack for a trip. When a person has to find the things they need, make sure the suitcase fits and just overall feeling ready. I got the idea when I realized my sister and mom are leaving for school trip to New York, because she is a part of the Drill Team. When I started to help them get ready I thought I could do it for my final project. I tried new angles and tried to show the struggle everyone knows goes through when getting ready to leave their home for a trip. I decided to make this a short documentary film. It is a short film but also shows my point of view of packing that is why I chose documentary.
This reflection document will touch on three very important topics regarding education and transformative learning, as follows, the context of the experience of transformation, learning circles and feedback systems and finally systems perspectives. The following article will show my understanding of the material and my learning as a whole.
As a person grows old, it is inevitable to have both physical and cognitive changes happen throughout their lifetime. In an average life span, a person’s physical and cognitive changes will normally vary depending on what age group they are in. For example, it is said that from birth to age five, a child will absorb more information including how to talk, language, form relationships, and fine motor skills than any other age. It is also said that that most rapid decline in physical ability is in older adults ranging from a loss in eyesight to severe dementia.
