Some people will go their entire lives without ever learning how to prepare food. I have enjoyed cooking from the first time I have ever made a meal and I believe I will enjoy it until the day I die. Learning to cook was not exactly an easy experience, yet it was still extremely rewarding. Cooking is an imperative skill for people to learn and I have spent years teaching myself how to be a better cook, and I intend to spend many more perfecting food.
I first discovered my desire to learn to cook when I was ten years old. My mother was never an amazing cook, but she did always put a warm meal on the table. The main focus for the class was to make a spanish dish called paella. Paella is a rice based dish that has chicken, shrimp, and other seafoods. It comes from Spain and it is an extremely hard dish to make due to its many combining flavors and intricate details. The class was focused on the more gourmet aspects of food, such as plating and using more uncommon foods. Everything was prepared fresh, including peeling and deveining shrimp, opening shells for scallops, and breaking down an entire chicken. This whole class really taught me the finer aspects of food and made me realize how much I truly enjoy cooking. My uncle was always an amazing chef. He has made some of the best food I have ever tasted and was one of the main people to teach me about food. He always encouraged me to try new things and would give me tips on little things to make my cooking better. Every year my uncle would throw a ginormous Christmas party. The entire family is invited and it is in total about forty people that all have a four course meal made for them. Two years ago my uncle decide to let me make all the food for the dinner. He did help me throughout, but I was given the creative freedom to make all the recipes and choices regarding the food. It was the hardest meal I have ever had to make, yet it was easily the most rewarding. I spent the entire morning, afternoon, and part of the night to finish all of the food for the meal at eight p.m. . The whole meal consisted of an iceberg wedge salad, a tilapia and scallop tomato based soup, chicken cordon bleu, and a banana pudding for dessert. Due to the sheer quantity of the food the meal had to be made in massive pots, a total of three ovens at one time, and cost almost 500 dollars for all the ingredients. After I finished all of the cooking my shirt was stained with sauce and I was the most exhausted I had been in a long time.
