While Central America faces different security challenges, the Republic of Panama copes with an important one. For Panama, the most important national security threat is Narco-terrorism because it negatively affects many aspects of our society. When looking for the cause of the augment in violence and criminal activities, the Panamanians identify that it is due to Narco-terrorism. In this essay, we will explain the concept of narcoterrorism; its root causes; impact and effects; how the Panamanian government is responding; and how this governmental response can be more effective.

From then on, many security experts have used the term to define the activities of criminal organizations like Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico, Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), or Shining Path in Peru. These criminal groups have so much power that they can match and even overpower security forces to protect their lucrative narcotics business. That is why; they can spread violence and affect people’s security. When drug dealers have that kind of power, they become a huge problem for the government and the society. Narco-terrorist will not stop doing their illegal business no matter human or monetary losses due to their millionaire illegal profits. The root cause of the problem is that Narco-terrorist groups will use any illegal tactics at their disposal like assassinations, bribes, and extortion to gain advantage over other competing groups and Panamanian security institutions. It is true that the Panamanian government invested this year 750.9 millions of dollars in security expenses, but narco-terrorists do not depend on budget or any kind of control to expend their money. Therefore, because of the power of plenty illegal money, narco-terrorist can use the land, the sea, and the air to move drugs like cocaine using any available means of transportation. In the past, they used planes; helicopters; ships; cars; truck, and human beings to carry drugs. Today, they continue using the traditional means of transportations; however, they have developed more sophisticated forms and technological tools. Therefore, they can use drones; submarines; semisubmersibles; tunnels; liquids; trained animals; containers; surgical implants; satellite communication; internet; smart phones, buoys with Global Position Systems and people of many social status.
