Congresswoman Elizabeth Hanford Dole grew up in North Carolina in the small town of Salisbury ,and was born to a wholesaler on July 29, 1936. Dole had a privileged childhood and had the opportunity to study private balled and horseback riding amongst other things. As she grew up she became a model student succeeding in academics as well as extracurricular activities, such as drama and student government; and even got elected as president of her freshman class. After high school like many girls her age, Dole proceeded to go to college where she followed in her brothers footsteps and attended Duke University where she majored in political science in 1958 after which she did post-graduate work at Oxford in 1959 (“San Diego 96”). Some of her many accomplishments while there was to be elected May queen, Student body president, and even got accepted into an undergraduate honors society by the name of Phi Beta Kappa.

There has been very low congressional approval in our country in recent years and it is a common belief that members of congress do not do their jobs and only care about getting re-elected. However after deeply researching Representative Gwen Moore of the fourth district of Wisconsin we learn that members of congress have many duties and responsibilities other than campaigning and raising money to get re-elected. Representatives must also serve on committees and subcommittees, provide services to their constituents, connect with their constituents in the media and write legislation. Gwen Moore’s past has shaped her passion for public service and political agenda which fits well with the needs and demographics of her district.

It is no coincidence that Arizona’s five highest offices are held by women. These women, Governor Jane Hull, Secretary of State Betsey Bayless, Attorney General Janet Napolitano, Treasurer Carol Springer, and Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Keegan, did not simply win these elections because they are women. All of them are experienced, highly educated, intelligent people who worked hard to get to the top. In an interview, Council Member Janet Marcus stated that these women have outstanding experience and background, and though being women may have helped them, it is their credentials that won the elections. The five women elected agree that it was not an issue of gender but rather of who was most qualified for the job. Lisa Graham Keegan was actually pleased at the small attention given to the gender issues. She said, “It really wasn’t about voting for women. It just happened that these women ran for office and won” (Khoury 2). Governor Hull agreed with Keegan, “You see a group of women who have all been in government, are all experienced, who all ran very positive campaigns.

She is drawing on the economic hurt of the nation to gain our trust and to build confidence in her vision for our country. At this point, her demeanor lightens up, she smiles a bit drawing the audience in, trying to get them to see her vision. She tries to get the audience excited by saying how the new Republican majority you elected, would reform Congress and make it function once again. She focuses on what is not working for Americans and brings forward ideas of what needs to be changed. She talks about creating thousands of jobs and pumping billions of dollars into the economy with the Keystone Bill. She talks of tax reform with lower tax rates in opposition to the President’s reform that is focused on closing loopholes for the super wealthy. To inspire the audience, she uses the terms common sense and common ground to pull the nation together to work toward a common goal. She uses talk of reform of Washington and reform of taxes as a shared beliefs and values, trying to identify common goals that we all can agree on.
