The Nakotans were Native Americans of the Great Plains. They lived mostly in Montana, North Dakota, Alberta and Saskatchewan. The Nakotan’s lived in small villages near lakes and rice swamps and usually found shelter in tipis. Men and women had different vastly roles in the settlements. Men hunted and women did all of the housework. They spoke in the language of Nakota which was one of the few dialects of the language Dakota. The Nakotans were originally part of a nation called the Sioux, but eventually broke away from the tribe, which separated into 3 different bands. These three bands were Dakota, Lakota and Nakota. The Nakota tribe has other names, including the Yankton’s and Assiniboine’s. At first, contact with the Europeans was great. The Nakotans came together with other fur trading allies to form the Iron Confederacy. This group of tribes dominated the Northern Plains and got their power from the fur trade. Creating this group demonstrated the name Nakota, which means ally. They traded these furs, usually those of beaver and bison, in exchange for guns and wool clothing with the French. Now the Nakotans could hunt with guns instead of bows. All good things come to an end, however. Some Nakota tribes were destroyed by other tribes, European diseases, and attacks from Europeans. Some Nakotans fled, and managed to join other tribes. Others were not so lucky, becoming slaves in the West Indies. It turns out that the Europeans were responsible for the tribal fighting, along with the deadliest thing, Smallpox. The smallpox brought over from Europe was responsible for decreasing the population from 10,000 people to 2,600. The Nakotans that survived kept the tribe going, but it was no longer the same.
