Naked Girls. Disrespect. Public store. “ Three Disrespectful half dressed girls in a public store.” In the store, they’ve experienced all of the following on one sunny Thursday. The girls character shows that they were disrespectful, careless,and bothered. Never disobey rules, it could cause much chaos to you and others. The three girls were very disrespectful or impertinent towards the manager, Lengel(Updike).     This Story takes place in 1961, in a small New England town's A&P grocery store.  Sammy, the narrator, is introduced as a grocery checker and an observer of the store's patrons.  He finds himself fascinated by a particular group of girls.  Just in from the beach and still in their bathing suits, they are a stark contrast, to the otherwise plain store interior.  As they go about their errands, Sammy observes the reactions, of the other customers, to this trio of young women.  He uses the word "Sheep" to describe the store regulars, as they seem to follow one and other, in their actions and reactions.  The girls, however, appear to be unique in all aspects of their beings: walking, down the isles, against the grain: going barefoot and in swim suits, amongst the properly attired clientele. They are different and this is what catches and holds Sammy's attention.  He sees them in such detail, that he can even see the queen of the bunch.  Sammy observes their movements and gestures, up until the time of their checkout.  At which point, they are confronted by the store manager and chastised for their unacceptable appearance.  He believes their attire to be indecent.  Sammy, feeling that the managerial display was unnecessary and unduly embarrassing for the girls, decides to quit his position as checker.  Thought he knows that his decision may be hasty, he knows that he has to follow through and he can never go back.  He leaves, with a clean conscious, but the burden of not knowing what the future has in store.

    In each short story the character(s) the author highlights are young girls. This is first evident in the title alone in “Girl” where the title already gives the impression of a universally known stereotype as being young, and naïve. Although the title “A&P” does not suggest the same implication, within the story the reader learns quickly that the girls described in the story are in fact young, and innocent and lacking instruction just as the character in “Girl.” Understanding the characters is important because it sheds light on the reasons why they do what they do, and give reason to the plot. In which case, the characters even become the plot, such as the two short stories referenced. The girls described by Sammy in “A&P,” consume much of the story just by description, making it unmistakable their character. “...And then the third one, that wasn’t quite so tall. She was the queen. She kind of led them...” (Updike). Momentarily the reader is able to develop an image of these girls because everybody, young or old, most probably has been witness to this type of entourage throughout middle/high school. The girl being referred to by Sammy, Queenie, is oblivious to the fact she is stirring up the scene in the store, showing her naivety. Similarly, in “Girl” the fact that the young girl is being given instructions on how to behave as an adolescent girl by her mother, is reason to believe she is so inexperienced that her mother felt the instructions were necessary. Sammy mentions, “He had been thinking all these years the A&P was a great big dune and he was the head lifeguard. The religious connotation in the phrase “Sunday-school-superintendent stare” is used to establish that Lengel holds a position of power over the girls. While the girls are of higher class than Lengel, his power as a male and the manager prevails over anyone else’s status and he is able to condemn those who go against his policies. The embarrassment of the girls contributes to the ideology of religion because it enforces the idea that society must follow the rules of those in power because everything happens according to God’s plan (Tyson 57). None of the other customers come to the girls’ defense because they trust Lengel as an authority figure and believe that his rules are justifiable. Sammy also compares Lengel to a lifeguard which further emphasizes the idea that Lengel’s job is to help others in need.
