NHS Acceptance Essay The standards for entrance into the National Honor Society are scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Through this paper I will strive to prove that I possess all of these qualities, and moreover, that I am qualified for entrance into an organization as prestigious as the National Honor Society. Over the past four years as a scholar, I believe that I have demonstrated all of these characteristics. That I have the scholarly ability required to be a NHS member is indicated simply by the fact that I was nominated for entrance into the NHS in the first place, though since I get the impression that more than this is required, I will point out that I have consistently made the honor roll every quarter during my years in both High- and Middle-school. Also, my involvement in the school's "Jets TEAMS" (Test of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) team during my Junior year functions as an indicator of my scholarship. Jets TEAMS is an intense, annual competition in which schools send 8 of their strongest students to compete against other schools in a nationwide contest. During my Junior year I was fortunate enough to be selected as one of the eight students (only 3 of whom were Juniors) who would go to the competition, and through our team's efforts, we were able to come in first in the state of Connecticut, earning recognition not just for ourselves, but for the town of Granby as well. Through my involvement in Jets TEAMS and my solid academic record, I feel that I have demonstrated the scholarship required for entrance into the National Honor Society. It is difficult to narrow things down to a single situation in which I have demonstrated leadership qualities to the extent that is required for entrance into the NHS, but for the purposes of this paper (and the sake of brevity), I will focus on my past involvement in the "People to People: Student Ambassador Program." People to People is a nationally recognized organization which sends groups of American students to foreign countries where they can learn about another culture by experiencing it firsthand. Their itinerary also stresses the development of leadership skills and the importance of teamwork. Through my involvement in this program, aside from learning a lot about a foreign culture (I traveled to Australia for 3 weeks), I also learned a great deal about the responsibilities and obligations that go along with being a leader.
I am writing to inform you of my possible contributions to the National Honor Society and my interest in becoming a member. I view myself as a strong minded individual with a strong incentive to learn. Acquiring the ability to learn fast and adapt quickly has enabled me to be a part of a wide range of organizations. My participation and loyalty to the NHS could result in a great strive forward. I could provide more ideas of services to benefit the school and our community. I would also devote a large portion of my free time to the organization and assist in any way possible. Whether that means coming in early in the morning or staying late after school, I would do any means necessary to show my commitment.
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 19, 1809. He was born to two poor actors, David Poe and Elizabeth Arnold Poe. David Poe was born to a good Baltimore family. He was known as a heavy drinker, and soon after Edgar was born, left his mother and Edgar’s two other siblings. Elizabeth was thought to be charming and talented, but she died an early death. She died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-four. Edgar was only three years old. The death of his mother ruined Edgar for the rest of his life. Edgar’s brother, WIlliam Henry Leonard Poe, also came to be a poet, but he had a n early demise. His sister, Rosalie Poe, grew up to teach penmanship. Edgar and his siblings were separated from each other after the death of their parents).Shortly after, Edgar was taken in by John and Frances Allan. John was a successful tobacco merchant. Edgar moved to England with the Allans and went to school in England from 1815 to 1820. Edgar and David did not see eye to eye at all. John wanted Edgar to be a businessman and a Virginian gentleman, but Edgar aspired to become a writer. By the time Edgar began college at the University of Virginia in 1826, he barely communicated or received support from the Allans. Edgar was a wonderful student but a terrible gambler. He soon accumulated a considerable amount of debt because John sent him to university with a measly amount of money. He did not have enough for expenses which led him to gambling. He was so poor and desperate that he burned his furniture to keep warm. Humiliated, he returned home to Richmond to discover that his fiancée, Elmira Royster, was engaged to another man. When my English teacher first spoke about the National Honors Society, I was eager to find more information about it. I highly praise and admire everything it emblematizes; I hope to be able to contribute everything I have to offer. I believe I can be a notable member of NHS for my school, Saddleback High School, and my community. Finding three weaknesses and three strengths about myself was a stirring challenge. Alike everyone, I have weaknesses and strengths, but finding a way to explain them was difficult to me.
National Honors Society is an extremely prestigious and well-known group that gave me the opportunity to assist the community while working harmoniously with my peers. To get into NHS, there are four pillars one must fulfill, including, scholar, service, leadership, and character. One may not realize it, but these qualities apply all throughout life. In order to be successful, one must achieve some form of each pillar. Being dedicated and committed to learning and improving but also using the knowledge one previously has is to be a scholar. When I was first inducted in the National Technical Honor Society, we were lacking in numbers and character. Our members were not involved and we weren’t taken seriously on campus, I decided that my high school chapter of the National Technical Honor Society needed a leader that was willing to seriously dedicate their time and energy to the organization. Since then I have held a leadership position every year. With my help and the help of like-minded individuals the National Technical Honor Society chapter at my high school has done a complete 180-degree spin from when I first arrived. We even raised enough money last year to give out three five hundred dollar scholarships to outgoing seniors. This progress however did not come easy; It took great perseverance from myself and the dedicated members of the National Technical Honor Society. She acknowledges that despite how big they may be that they can still turn heads. By the end of this poem you can conclude that after all the speaker had mentioned about her hips, that her tone had gone from firm and confident to semi humorous. Sometimes it is best to soak and laugh at ourselves. After all, laughing makes us healthier. With the speaker stating that she has magical hips, you can tell she owns her self-worth and can joke about it without feeling any type of hurt or resentment about her
In her work, Cofer presents many issues of Puerto Rican society. She challenges gender roles and takes steps to unite the two cultures she lives in without losing either one. “Claims” tells several stories—the story of an old woman’s life and of a female’s place in Puerto Rican society, for example. It has vivid imagery of the old woman, of the ocean, and of shipwrecks. “Claims” defends a woman’s right to be herself, rather than a slave of society and of her family. In this poem, Cofer once again challenges the expectations and limitations placed on women by society. It is a complicated work with many layers of meaning.

In a beautifully descriptive poem titled “Diving into the Wreck”, author Adrienne Rich seems to be depicting a quest the narrator is on, to delve deep into the sea and explore a wreckage beneath the waves. The poem focuses more so on the preparation and process of the dive rather than of the search of the wreckage itself, which plays an interesting factor in the poem. But, as the narrator dives into the water, the reader is taken into a deeper journey along with them. Diving under the surface of the poem, and looking further into the meaning, there is a central theme of women who have been oppressed for hundreds of years struggling for their rights in a society that is mainly dominated by males. Thus, there is so exceptional about this specific poem. There are a lot of melodies or songs out there about beautiful women, but Byron did it initially, and made a really wonderful showing.Next time you end up sitting in general place like a coffee shop, trying to find the proper words to depict that lovely singular you can't escape your mind, chances are you'll end up haunted by the expressions of Byron, the father of all emo writers. In this essay I am going to compare and contrast the speakers and the stories of 'Homage to my Hips'; and 'Her Kind';. The speakers in this stories have very different attitudes, and approaches in telling their story about the same topic. While talking about the oppression of women, both Lucille Clifton and Anne Sexton take the own stance on the situation. While Clifton expresses her proud and self-confident attitude, Sexton on the other hand speaks in a very snotty, self-righteous tone. Each of these extremely influential woman, that I will be talking about describe their own individual experiences. These experiences create a very clear, individualistic tone that makes the poems of these two writers differ in many ways.
Mohja Kahf opens the poem by describing women’s state in the society. She says, “All women speak two languages” (2003, 51). First, women speak “the language of men” (51) because of the patriarchal system since women have no voice in the society and cannot express their opinions and thoughts. Second, women speak “the language of silent suffering.” (51). Their stories give them voice especially the stories of inequality and injustice. However, Kahf’s wonderful friends speak a third language, which is the language of queens because they are strong, courageous and wise.
