The NFL is looking into Advanced Technology to assist in creating a safer game. To encourage more development of new technology and products to address concerns with player safety the NFL has created a system that incentivizes developers. We have created a “Engineering Roadmap” by bringing together people from academia, industry, government, and the NFLPA to determine the most pressing needs of our players. Helmets, Artificial Turf and the Ahead 3000 are the top developments in progress. Helmets are an area of concern. To aid in the development of new technology, the NFL has made technology available for people to test new helmet concepts virtually. This is available at almost no cost. The NFL has also allocated a large sum of money towards the medical research of making the game of football a safer sport. Due to the intense scrutiny of the way we as the NFL have handled players has lead us to launch a new set of concussion and health related initiative which included allocating $100 million dollars into researching the prevention, diagnostics, and treatments of concussions. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement saying “The NFL has been a leader on health and safety in many ways, and we’ve made some real strides in recent years, But when it comes to addressing head injuries in our game, I’m not satisfied, and neither are the owners of the NFL’s 32 clubs. We can and will do better.” Sixty percent of the $100 million has gone towards the funding of equipment research, mainly improving and providing safer helmets for the players. We plan to use experts and engineers to find a way to get the same technology used in automobiles and find way to implement them in the helmets of today. For Safe Football Advocacy Group Position For Safer Football is an advocacy group which includes former players, the medical community, parents of youth players, etc. They have formed this group to specifically to address the safety of football at all levels. They are engaging the NFL leadership to discuss youth football and how the NFL can influence youth programs to be safer. For Safer Football claims that the NFL has not done enough to make the NFL safer. They believe the NFL should do more to combat the decline in children signing up to play football in youth leagues and we should do more on the grassroots level. For Safer Football is also concerned that the NFL has lost too much money because of lawsuits, and bad publicity. Solutions they have suggested are more research into medical marijuana to combat CTE symptoms, new helmet research, safer tackling techniques and no tackles during pre-season to limit
