NFL’s Head Injury Epidemic
Imagine being a successful NFL player who played for 8 seasons, made a good amount of cash, played in the best defense of that time, and retired happily with a successful sports career. Now imagine 30 years after retirement that you kill yourself because you can’t take the clinical depression and dementia caused directly from the constant hitting you endured during your football career. That is the story of Ray Easterling's life. The NFL is America's most popular and thrilling sport to watch. Football athletes put their health on the line playing the sport they dedicate their lives too. Short term injuries like a broken bone are something athletes know they must deal with, but so many football players are unaware …show more content…

The NFL has already been doing this, which is a step in the right direction, until you realize that, “The New York Times has found that the N.F.L.'s concussion research was far more flawed than previously known.” (Schwarz). One of the reasons for faulty research was that NFL teams are not required to submit NFL concussion data. The NFL took advantage of that and pretended they did not know that all concussions were not reported for the research so that it looked like concussions were less of a problem than it seemed. It get’s worse once you hear the that NFL tried, “...to influence the scientific understanding of the consequences of repeated head trauma.” (Maese) in order to get biased research saying concussions are not as bad as people portray them. The mindset of spending millions just to get flawed and faulty data puts the science of concussions, head injuries, and CTE at a major disadvantage. Next, the NFL could implement and force players to start using gear that helps cushion impacts to the head, like a new helmet. The University of Washington developed a new helmet that, “adapts to any head size …show more content…

The NFL’s first option is to promote the field of medical marijuana and allow not only CTE-diagnosed players to use it but also active players. CBD, a compound found in marijuana, “...has shown scientific potential to be an antioxidant and neuroprotectant for the brain.” (Washington). This is key because constant hits to the head make your brain inflamed which is cut down by marijuana and helps cognitive function. The negative stigma behind marijuana will probably never leave us, but overall, the big picture of marijuana is being changed by its legalization around the United States. Another positive of the compound CBD is you can take just that compound and not get high, because the compound in marijuana that gets your high, THC, is not present in CBD but gives you the medicinal benefits. Moving on, providing research for concussions is key, but it is just as important to help science find an accurate and reliable diagnosis method for CTE. The NFL does not yet realize that, “The sooner doctors can tell someone he will or won't be at risk for CTE, the better it is for the long-term future of the NFL.” (Armour). CTE is only currently diagnosed through an autopsy, and lots of people have been wrongly said to have CTE and then proven wrong in an autopsy. Living your life with constant mood swings, depression, memory loss, and suicidal thoughts is something no one
