From the beginning of civilization, came the most important roles society unintentionally plays. With every role society displays, there are other values and myths that accompany it. However, throughout time, there has been the evolution above these myths and values to create and better ourselves. However, these myths and values intertwine as one idea is said while the reality is far-fetched. Through that, we continue to grow and shape ourselves differently than our four fathers. The act of critical thinking is why societies have grown and achieved great heights. It is only a matter of time before our dreams and ideas about the future become a reality. Today’s societal values consist of many things including diversity and being interconnected globally. Our melting pot of a society is one that thrives on differences. Differences in culture and background can result in differences in thinking and strategy. However, the myth comes in where it is said that all people of different backgrounds can have a Horatio Alger success story. The problem lies with how they achieve this dream. In order to become Horatio Alger, one needs to “embrace the distinctively European-US values of hard work, determination and loyalty.” (Conrad …show more content…
The way an individual could put their all into a venture should be enough for them to earn a vast amount of money. However, the fairy tale myth is busted when government has no choice but to regulate businesses. If they didn’t, then some companies could potentially create major monopolies and put the United States economy in distress at large. The government presumes that the futility theses, perversity theses and jeopardy theses are all arguments as to how laissez-faire can be balanced out. This act of critical thinking is a way to protect the littler, less powerful individual trying to keep their businesses and livelihoods
Paul Krugman, in his article “The Death of Horatio Alger” suggests that social mobility among classes in the United States is becoming more difficult by the day. Krugman explains that the idea of the American Dream and moving from class to class was once semi easily attainable; but is now seemingly impossible. Although America is thought of as a classless society, the country has a whole is moving into a caste society run by the rich.
Success is the chance to go out there and use the resources available to take advantage of opportunities that most people do not. Usually, things happen in life and it can prevent the process of obtaining success. In the readings, “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara and “Horatio Alger” by Harlon L. Dalton conveys the message that success is not always an everyday thing and it takes opportunities for it to become part of life. In “The Lesson”, an angered girl named Sylvia is taken on a field trip to a toy store with Miss Moore to learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is to become successful in society because it is the only way to make it to the top. On the other hand, “Horatio Alger” shows more of a realistic viewpoint where success is not as easy
This suggests that life has nothing to do with race, gender, class, or sexual orientation. They may exist however, they do not play a role in how he or she is evaluated. Each person has a chance at their own true potential as they all start out equal and have the ability to create their own opportunities (261). This myth implies that the opportunities that are presented were created solely by their own potential. One can simply say if they didn’t succeed they didn’t try hard enough. Alger goes on to say, that being committed to merit-based decision making and the existence of standards to measure merit must not unfairly favor one person over another (262-263). However, the standards must come from somewhere or be decided by somebody. Alger’s myths suggest that the pecking order is maintained, to overlook the racial barriers that are so prevalent in American society (264). Horatio Alger’s myths are a falsehood that clearly does not resonate with how society conducts itself
This novel can easily be compared to the topics I’ve learned about in class. Topics covered in the classroom are the importance of thinking critically about things in day-to-day life. Levitt’s and Dubner’s book is an excellent example of the things that can be produced from thinking critically about the world around us. Being a critical thinker aids people in making intelligent and educated decisions.
In today’s society many technological advances have contributed to advanced communication. While these are advantageous and can improve communication across the globe, they have become a hindrance to critical thinking. With the advancement of technology throughout the world human beings are able to think less while still “functioning.” Literacy is thrown to the wayside and texting “lingo” runs rampant. Why read a book when you can watch the movie? Students are becoming less interested in language, reading, and writing and more involved with surfing the web for answers. This shift in the value of literacy opens the world up to many dangers that if not confronted and demolished could lead to a society unable to think for themselves.
With the idea of Alger’s moral, America is a place where the poor can become rich. Krugman disagreed with Alger because it never has been as easy as it sounds. “The Death of Horatio Alger” by Paul Krugman concentrated on the causes of economic inequality and the value of the American Dream. This article was published in 2004. Krugman received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 2008 fro trade patterns and economic activity. Paul Krugman attended Yale University then Massachusetts Institute of Technology and teaches at Princeton University. The life of economic inequality is characterized by the increasing of the income and wealth inequality, the hardness of the poor adapting to the upward mobility and the inheritance socioeconomic status from the previous generation.
Questions are something that must be asked and can be very important when reading a literary work, watching a movie, or just simply trying to understand the habits of people today. Asking questions opens up the human brain to dig farther and deeper into the meaning of why someone did something in a specific way and what purpose it has that something must be done in that way. Critical thinking is asking question and trying to hypothesize on what the answer to that question might be. Critically thinking is a healthy aspect of opening up the brain and will improve one’s thought process on how to apply critical thinking in situations where it is dependent, like a future
Free enterprise is a form of economy in which the government takes minimal control through regulation. In this form of economy the price and production of goods is decided by the consumers and producers and their wants and needs, and by considering how all of these can be met in the face of scarcity. While scarcity defines resources that are available against infinite wants and needs, it can also be used to describe the fact that future products do not yet exists and new markets have not yet been explored, and in order for consumers’ needs and wants to be met, entrepreneurs must invent new products and open new fields of study. Arguably, one of the most influential entrepreneurs in American history was Andrew
In the preface, Maya realizes that she differs from white people. She compares the implications of being aware of that knowledge to having a razor at her throat. Maya chooses a razor because a razor near a throat is dangerous and potentially deadly. In addition, she also feels that she does not fit in with the rest of the black people in her community because she longs to be white, never talks with a Southern accent, and loathes the traditional Southern black food. Knowing that she is different makes Maya uncomfortable and lowers her self-esteem by reminding her constantly that she does not belong in the South.
How ones think about their future determines the kind of development that one’s add in life. In many cases critical thinking in development of new professional development. An example is the development of vehicles and specifically the combustion systems. Recently v engines have come up which have improved the vehicle efficiency and speed. This has all been brought through critically thinking about efficiency and speed of the car which has led to its improvement. Generally how one’s mind thinks determines a lot of the improvement of one’s

The first ancestor of humans whom said to himself, "Every one has always made bone tools but they break awful easily. I bet we could make tools out of something else, what if I tried this rock?" was using critical thinking. So too were most of the social, artistic and technological groundbreakers that followed. You’d be hard pressed to finds an advance in almost any area of humanities development that didn't start with someone looking at the way things were and saying "It doesn't have to be that way. What if we looked at it from another angle?" There exercize of critical thinking and it’s developments across time is directly responsible for the world we live in today. We may never be able to accurately judge the full scope of it’s affects which are literally
What is not easily recognized is the fact that the very fabric of life is dependent on the ability to think properly and make good decisions. Improper thinking is costly in the quality of life and monetarily. The result of a critical thinker that has worked to cultivate proper thinking skills includes: the ability to ask vital questions and to identify problems with clarity. A critical thinker also collects relevant information while effectively interpreting it, thinks with an open mind, uses alternative systems of thought, and understands how to communicate while working to formulate a strong solution. In summary, critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. Above all else, the standards of excellence are rigorous, and it entails the prospect of overcoming the challenge of sociocentrism and
“The combination of all these causes forms so great a mass of influences hostile to individuality that it is not easy to see how it can stand its ground. It will do so with increasing difficulty unless the intelligent part of the public can be made to feel its value, to see that it is good there should be differences.” (208, Mill) People who always think new ideas go thru a harsh path, but they learn from their mistakes and experiences, and keep moving forward and in the end those who do make it, make society
Critical thinking regularly involves the capability to interpret information and make knowledgeable decisions based on such information. Additionally, problem solving is frequently theorised as the use of critical thinking skills towards the effective solution of a specific problem or towards a specific end goal. Critical thinking is the disciplined art of ensuring that you use the best thinking you are capable of in any set of circumstances. The general goal of thinking is to figure out some situation” (Critical Thinking, 2001, p.1), solve some problem, answer some questions, or resolve some issue. It also is a process in which a person pursuits reliable and pertinent information about the world. Critical thinking is often described as reasonable, ruminative, trustworthy, and a well-practiced form of thinking that assists people with deciding what they should believe in and what actions should be taken. A practiced critical thinker will ask good questions, collects pertinent data, categorizes common characteristics, logically reasons with the new data and then he or she will come to a trustworthy and dependable conclusion. Critical thinking makes use of many processes and procedures. Some processes include but is not limited to asking questions, making judgments, and identifying
