My uncle, Luis Felipe Alcantara, is certainly a man of great knowledge. His eyes have seen many things from the first time Michael Jackson hit his signature moonwalk on TV to the stage he proudly walked on accepting his degrees he worked so hard for from Saint John’s University. He currently lives in Central Islip, New York working as a teacher at Central Islip Senior High School teaching many of the bilingual students and the rest of the student population. He is also the boys and girls head swim coach for the school and runs a Learn to Swim program at the school as well. He also is the man responsible for teaching me and my cousins how to swim. Abuelito Who And The Old Grandfather “Abuelito Who” and “The Old Grandfather,” tell two different stories about two different grandfathers and their families, in two different forms of writing. The grandfathers’ family member(s) are present in both writings, whether they are the speaker themselves or just a character amidst the meaningful plot. These family members treat each grandfather in completely different ways, changing the writing entirely. The grandfather in the folktale is mistreated and abused, while the other in the poem is loved, but something happens and the poem turns somber as it goes on. If you somehow knew your future and figured out that you would not be cared for well when you could no longer care for yourself, what would you do?
Simeon Adams Dunn is my 5 times great grandpa. Born August 7, 1803, in Groveland, Livingston County, New York to Simeon Dunn and Sarah (Sally) Bath. His father left his home and family when Simeon was but a few years old. And when he was seven, his father joined the army and surrendered and died because of it. His mom died leaving the children Mary, William, Simeon, and James alone with no parents. The 4 children had friends take care of them.
Power relationships are represented in different ways in various texts dependent on the historical era from which the text is produced. Jasper Jones is a coming-of-age novel written by Australian writer, Craig Silvey in 2009. It follows the life of Charlie Bucktin, a thirteen year old resident of Corrigan, a rural mining town in Western Australia as he matures into adulthood. In order to protect Jasper Jones, the town’s ‘troublemaker’, he helps Jasper to dispose the dead body of Laura Wishart, the missing daughter of the shire president and struggles to keep this dreadful secret. Power relationships in this novel have been reflected, reinforced and challenged in their own context and my personal context through various narrative conventions. Racial power has been reflected in the text through the context in which the text is set. Sexual power has been reinforced in the contemporary context. Furthermore, in both the text’s context and my context, the idea of political power has been challenged.
My grandmother, Rokeya Sultana, grew up in the urban parts of Bangladesh, with 2 sisters and 3 brothers. Her father, my great grandfather, was the chief officer of the district. She would go to school or to places by a motorcycle, car, or helicopter. She was living the life of her dreams. But then, my great grandfather had diabetes, and it was discovered one month before he died. It was a great shock for my great grandmother’s family because they had to move from the urban city to a rural neighborhood. My grandmother went to elementary, middle, and high school as a child. She also received a Bachelor’s degree in teaching. She was a good student and a very honest and respectful person. Once she reached the age of 20 to 21, she married Jonab Ali, my grandfather, and moved to Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh.
A Year in the South 1865 by Stephen V. Ash is a book that follows four individuals during the Civil War. These individuals come from different backgrounds and faced different challenges that later affected their ability to adjust to the end of the war and their daily lives after the war had ended. In Tombigbee, Alabama we have Louis Hughes which by the way Stephen described was very educated. Cornelia McDonald has seven children and was the wife of a Confederate army officer. She was located in Lexington, Virginia. The exempt minister that served in the northern eastern part of Tippah, Mississippi was named Samuel Agnew. He was supposed to join the Confederates but his position as a minister helped him stay away from facing the obstacles in
Jonathan Swift is one of the best known satirists in the history of literature. When one reads his works, especially something like Gulliver’s Travels, it is easy for one to spot the misanthropic themes, which emerge within his characterization. Lamuel Gulliver is an excellent protagonist: a keen observer, and a good representative of his native England, but one who loses faith in mankind as his story progresses. He ends up in remote areas of the world all by accidents in his voyages. In each trip, he is shipwrecked and mysteriously arrives to lands never before seen by men. This forms an interesting rhythm in the novel: as Gulliver is given more and more responsibility, he tends to be less and less in control.

John Hancock was well-liked by his parish, was paid well, and was provided a very comfortable home. In return of their generosity, he was a "faithful shepard." He kept an attentive watch over the morals and religious well-being of all members of the parish.

(Boynick) Born in Florence on the 28th of November 1632, (Boynick) Giovanni Battista Lulli was a miller’s son. (Sadie 2000 pg 166) Lully first arrived in France in March of 1646 (Jean Baptiste Lully) to work as an attendant for a female courtier. History is a vast collection of stories and perspectives from the beginning of time to the present day. Many people have only cursory knowledge of history and some of its important turning points. Few people stop to think about the experiences of those who lived through that history and what it must have been like during that time. Even fewer may be aware that they may have ancestors who were a part of that history. Through the combined methods of formal genealogy and historical research it is possible to see one’s own past come alive. This paper examines the ancestry of the 21st century history student ad uncovers the connections to past events in North American history.
Throughout my life I have heard a wide range of stories from my parents. When putting this assignment together I have put these stories into account. Randall Bass, educator of English at Georgetown University, concurs that stories shape individuals ' personalities. Bass expresses that, "People infer their feeling of personality from their way of life, and societies are frameworks of conviction that decide how individuals experience their lives" (Bass 1). Social stories about family history, religion, nationality, and legacy impact individuals ' conduct and convictions. Personalities of diverse individuals originate from their societies. Narrating starts at home. Stories associate individuals to their frameworks of convictions. They shape individuals ' lives by giving them a model of how to live. Individuals get their most punctual learning from distinctive stories. (Bass)
My family’s history can go as far back as the four fathers, but I was unable to get information that far back. Both my mother and father come from similar places, which come together to the point where I was created. My father has more history of moving around the nation than my mother and I has combined. They both have worked so hard to become physically, emotionally, and financially stable to give me a better future than they had to endure. With all the sweat, blood and tears, my family’s ancestral history will be an extensive and rough journey.
Giovanni Battista Lulli was born on November 28, 1632. His father, Lorenzo di Maldo, was a miller and his mother, Caterina del Sera, was a miller’s daughter. Lully was born in Florence, Italy and lived there until age 11. While in Italy he studied dance and music; he played violin and guitar. In March of 1646 he moved to France to tutor Mlle de Montpensier in Italian. There he studied composition and harpsichord. Lully was able to hear the King’s grande bande perform, witness balls where the best French dance music was played.
