My research project question was; How can a person with limited experience find a job on an Australian cattle station. My sub-questions were; Are there any skills required to work on a station? If so, what skills?, Would Uni/TAFE/school subjects etc. help me obtain a job on a cattle station?, Do I need to learn new skills? If so what?, What certificates are needed? I obtained my information from online sources, formal and informal interviews and practical experience. The majority of my information came from primary sources such as the interviews I conducted on my trip to Anna Creek Station and the experience itself. The process that gave me my most valuable information was practical experience obtained from my trip to Anna Creek Station. Centralstation.net.au gave me some really good information, a particular article “Tips for Station Newbies” was very useful as it was written from experience and it aided me on my trip to Anna Creek. Job seeking websites such as Seek.com.au and The Job Shop were excellent sources to find information about the kinds of jobs on offer, the skills you need and what the demand was like for different jobs.
I found that all the websites I used were accurate. I had to be careful using websites that were opinion based not fact based as they tended to be biased and many were hard to prove reliability. A combination of fact and opinion was the best way to complete my research as my question would be incredibly hard to answer with just facts.
I found that a combination of online information and my trip to Anna Creek was the most useful combination of sources because online information is easily assessable, has multiple types of information (e.g. journals, job offerings, etc.) and for the topic I picked mostly reliable. My Anna Creek visit was an excellent source of information because I got to talk to real life station workers, experience station life and the skills required and observe what made an ideal worker whilst learning skills myself that will be beneficial to me in the
