My Social Class System

The social class system was designed to categorize individuals into different groups, such as upper, middle, and lower class. Of course, the idea of the social class system is something that is viewed differently by every single person. America is typically known for “The American Dream,” however achieving this dream is much easier said than done, especially for anyone outside of the upper class. I was raised in a two parent household, with my mother being the one with a career while my father dropped out of high school and is self-employed. However, I would label myself as lower middle class based off of the neighborhoods I have lived in, the way I was raised, and the type of jobs my parents have. I’ve never been required to get a job to help pay bills around the house, I’ve always had a roof over my head, clothes on my back, shoes on my feet, and a hot meal prepared for me every night. While I am not spoiled, I feel as if I’ve never had to want something so bad and not be able to get it. My education has always been paid for, the only trouble with school I’ve experienced is the trouble I currently have now. My parents did not set aside a college fund for me and I did not get my first job until this summer before starting school. I’ve been able to pay for all my books this semester, but as far as tuition, I don’t exactly have that figured out just yet. I’m currently hunting for scholarships before settling for having to take out a loan from any financial institution. Lee Warren stated this in an article: “Middle class students are the least aware of class. They assume a place in the university, and they come fairly well prepared for higher education, although there is a wide range in their preparation. They are more protected than the lower class students and somewhat more naive, as well as more confident. They assume they will succeed and are prepared to work hard. Many work outside of school (though not as much as lower class students), and they see working as both an advantage and a disadvantage...” (2). To clarify, I believe this is true because I honestly do feel as if I have been shielded from the reality of how the world
