I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing. In this beginning of the quarter I had many challenges when it came to writing a paper and I feel that I have improved my skills when it came to writing an essay. When I came to college just out of high school, I came with the mentality that the classes would be no different from one another. I have practiced time after time to try and reach my peak in writing skills, I may not be there yet, but I know that I have to practice to help me when I write. I may find problems that I have in my writing now and in know that usually not all writing is perfect the first time. I hope that with the practice that I have had I have built one of the strongest papers that I have built in this quarter in my English 101 class. I hope to use the skill that I have learned in this class in the future to build some of the best writing that I can create. English 102 demands my full attention as much as humanly possible. From the first day I walked into your classroom this semester, I knew I was going to be pushed to produce the work I know I am capable of generating. Although I felt English 102 was going to be a challenge, I felt I had a major advantage over the rest of the peers in our class. The advantage undoubtedly being that I had the same professor the foregoing semester. By choosing a professor whom I felt comfortable writing for, as well as an increased comfort level with your familiar teaching style and grading scheme, I felt I would have the easiest transition into your classroom. Instead of taking a different English 102 class with a new professor who would take half of the semester to learn my name, let alone my writing style, I was confident that you would be able to pick up on my weaknesses and help me exploit my strengths as a writer. For instance, last semester you helped me to spot my ongoing weaknesses in my writing style such excessive run-on sentences, proper grammar and the use of appropriate punctuation where necessary. I knew these weaknesses were going to be a challenge in that I saw them as “carryover” problems from year to year in my schooling. You also have helped me to realize what strengths I possess and, in turn, carryover from year to year as well. For instance, the confidence in my ability to summarize and synthesize material from varied sources as well as my ability to write creatively have all given me the self-assurance I need to write with meaning and purpose.
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
Writing papers has been one of my biggest fears as a student. High school English class prepared me for the editing of my essays, for example, grammatical errors, spelling, font errors, and things that were under the category of fixing my paper. I realized that the writing process requires more than just editing, you have to understand that the paper is like a human body, it cannot function if every single part is not effective. I can certainly say that I have improved as a writer a great deal and this portfolio and the final revised drafts of my work certainly can argue for that. English 101 was certainly different from my other English classes; we actually focused on different parts of the writing process in each class instead of wasting our time discussing the same components of the process over and over again. As I reflect on my experiences throughout the semester of English 101 I am aware that I have met very important requirements of writing that I feel were very valuable for me as a student and my writing has improved progressively.
Although I know there is still much to improve on in my writing, I feel as though I have made tremendous strides for my first semester. I have grown as a writer, and I believe I have the potential to be a great writer. Throughout my many years left here at The College of New Rochelle, I will continue to work hard so that my final year here at the college I can look back at my writings from freshman year to see my improvement. Writing 101 has boosted my confidence and has made me a better writer today. I will take this confidence along with determination to my writing 102 class, and I hope the professor will continue the molding process that Professor smart has started.
In this portfolio reflection essay I will be addressing the five essays I have written for my English 101 class. Along with addressing the five essays I have wrote I also will be stating my strengths and weaknesses of those essays. The five essays this portfolio will include is a diagnostic essay, revised narrative essay, profile essay, evaluation essay, and arguing a position essay. Those five essays I have written over the course of this semester have been very helpful towards my writing skills. Punctuating, staying on topic, my introductions, and conclusions are areas I struggle with when writing papers, but by writing those five papers during this semester has helped me improve on those areas.
Working toward something is always a struggle because I believe without struggle there would not be any success. Success comes to those that are working tremendously hard and those that do not give up when everybody else does. Reaching a short or long-term goal required dedication, determination, and the sacrifice of giving up one thing for another thing. The same rule applies in education, in English 102, the writing and research that I did and also the revision process that I went through helped me to gain more knowledge and understand more of “academic writing and research”. It took me quite a while to figure out what I want to research on and the hardest step to my research papers was maintaining a controlling purpose.
I sincerely appreciate the opportunity you have provided for me and my fellow students the past few weeks. The experience I have had with your fourth grade class has given me a sense of personal accomplishment while meeting the requirements for our writing unit. I have learned so much about your students and their ever growing writing abilities throughout my time with them. Although our time was limited, I am proud to say they have each grown as writers and as individuals. Although they may have been weary at first, each student opened up to me in their own way.
As my English 101 class comes to an end, I have realized how much I have transformed as a writer. In this essay, I am going to explain what I realized my strengths and weaknesses are as a writer and how they have manifested themselves throughout the quarter. I was skeptical at first coming into this class knowing that English takes formidable work and dedication, but I am very proud of the progress I have made. We completed a great deal of work throughout the quarter; from grammar exercises, summary reviews, and two challenging essays. Throughout the quarter I found myself improving in each category. As a writer, my skills and confidence have developed into more clarity and thought, something I have always wanted to be, as a result of a well constructed class that led to a superb educational experience.
At the start of this class, I made a goal to develop my writing skills to better prepare me for other courses for my degree. I knew English 106 would be different compared to any other English or college courses that I have taken. I knew English 106 environment will let me grow in diverse writing dimensions. My long serving years of experience in the military has exposed me to many cultures around the globe. In just seven weeks of the course, I have seen some improvement in my writing. This course has afforded me with several techniques that have made writing not only a little bit easier but also more in-depth resulting in a higher level of academic writing versus my normal military style writing. Creating this portfolio has been a blast. Although, there were certain parts to the portfolio that did not play to my strengths. For example, the very first piece you asked to be written was very challenging for me. It took me many rough drafts to be able to indirectly characterize a psychological trait of a character. My first couple of drafts for this piece were describing different traits of the character. I was easily frustrated with the end results of all the pieces, so I scrapped the idea of physical trait and shifted my focus to a physiological trait. It was also challenging for me to describe my first trip to Disney World as negative experience, especially since that trip was the first thing I vividly remember and having an amazing
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude for all the efforts that you have invested in helping me improve my writing throughout this course. The exertions which you devoted in me did not go in vain. Throughout this semester, I have become more insightful in regard to the process of writing as a whole. Who knew that writing can be challenging yet rewarding simultaneously? Through many challenges encountered in this class and many exercises comprised in this course, I was exposed to new writing process, audiences, and I became more inclined to taking risks in the art of writing. As the semester took form, I came to find myself careworn by certain elements of the writing process. Unlike many writers, beginning to write,
Writing for me has always been a love and hate relationship since I could remember. Depending on the subject matter that I was writing about I would enjoy it because it suited my style or I loathed it because that specific style was uninteresting and boring to me. Learning certain writing formats were absolutely the worst part about writing when I first started learning in high school. As time pushed on and I grew older I began to develop an appreciation for writing that I did not have before; which is what led me to taking Writing 101 as my first full-fledged college course. I began this course with minimal writing experience because of what I failed to retain before, but now I am a stronger writer than I could have imagined with new skill sets that enhance my professional portfolio.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
