Chapter Ten - Senior Year
I can tell you right now that I took this year for granite. Only because I didn’t realize how amazing it was to get to see the love of my life every single day. It was just so repetitive and normal that I was being to not know anything different. The year began like any other, our lives consumed with football and cheerleading. How typical of a high school couple. Fall is my favorite time of year and I loved every second of it. One of the happiest things I’m so glad I did that year was get pictures of Caleb and I in our uniforms together. I still love looking at those pictures to this day. I would say that we both had an amazing senior year together, we even shared a locker. But throughout the year I would say how I was so excited to graduate and go to college and Caleb would keep telling why would you be excited when our senior year is one of the best of our lives. And I understand that now, it truly was one of the best times of my life. Looking back at all of my years in high school I truly had the best of times. And most of those times were with Caleb. Oh
I was pretty sure I wanted to go to the University of Oregon but I still left my options open, and boy did Caleb not like that. He thought that since I was looking at out of state schools that that meant that I didn’t want to be with him anymore and that it gave me an out to break up with him. He is so cute and funny, I was only looking at these other schools to maybe be able to do sports at them to help pay for school. In the end I got an amazing scholarship to go to any in state school I wanted which was great! But honestly I knew I was going to stay in Oregon because I love it way too much to leave it and I know that I wouldn’t have made it if I didn’t get to see Caleb as often as I did. As young girl with big dreams I imagined my senior year of high school to be one of the best years of my life. I imagined going to homecoming with all of my friends, being the captain of the varsity soccer and cheerleading teams, going to Friday night football games, going to Prom with my perfect date, and going on a senior trip with all of my best friends. I never imagined my senior year to be the way that it is. I am the new kid.
“Coastal Carolina is too far away for you to come home when you have the chance.” Kaylee (my Girlfriend at the time) said to me in my first car as we talked about college choices. I told her about my acceptance to Coastal Carolina University I received from Mrs. Emmons (personal guidance counselor in high school) during a school day, early February. Kaylee’s words made me start a to question myself; “What other colleges can I choose?”. I came home and sat down with my parents in the living room with my Coastal Carolina acceptance letter in my hand and they were proud of me. To this point I have wrote about a lot of fun things I have done throughout high school, but that was just the PG version. Sophomore year is when things really began to heat up. One day over at Alex’s we found the key to his parents liquor cabinet. We did exactly what 15 year old guys would do, took some sips and wow did we think we were badasses. Looking back opening the cabinet taking a few sips and locking it back up really quick was quite comical. One night during Sophomore year it was Alex, Cal, and I, Alex drank a lot and we started to walk around town (no license yet). We walked around town for a long time with Alex’s sloppy ass. Walking into Walnut Hills High School right now would have anyone thinking the just walked into the middle of a tornado. Everyone you look there are students running in and out of doors, in and out of cars, and most certainly either turning in missing assignments or retaking tests. There is only one way for you to explain all this ciaos, Senior Year, the year that all teens await with so much excitement and ambition and the year that every single hour long study dates pays off. For the class of 2021 this isn’t just their final year at Walnut Hills this is the year that friends separate and head off to their different university to follow their dreams.
6th grade, and I was saying hello, and now 8th grade has come and it’s gone from introductions to goodbyes as my last days as a middle school student wind down. 8th grade, 8th grade from the opening day to the signing of the yearbooks. This is the year of memories, goodbyes, and regrets. 8th grade and I’m still realizing that there are people in the world that would die to go to a school like this.
Sophomore year began, and I became a student leader at robotics. I was the youngest leader there, most people started when they were juniors. I gained so much experience and so many valuable life skills that will help me throughout. I learned skills such as communication, and people management skills. At last, my final year of high school is towards its end. I have had a very rough year for my twelfth grade year but I know that I can still do it.
Last year at the beginning of the school year I was just starting high school as a freshman at St.T. I was excited about starting there because I had the chance to meet some new people and teachers. Most of the students I had already went to school with from kindergarten to when we graduated eighth grade together, and I went to school with a lot of the upperclassmen in previous years at Our Lady of Lourdes so, I wasn’t scared because I knew so many people already. Anyway, the first semester was fine. I as on the cheer team, I had good grades, and kept them up, and i was gone almost every weekend hanging out with friends. Then the second semester comes. I wasn’t going to cheer practices, my grades dropped, and I missed so many weeks of school
My senior year is very important and that is why I must use it efficiently. There are many things I hope to accomplish during my senior year. Graduation is my top priority because if I do not graduate my future will be in jeopardy. Clubs and extra activities are very important for college acceptance. I hope to get certified in the areas in which I have been training for. Getting into college so that I can be successful is the main goal in my life is. As the end of my senior year in high school approached, I had to make an important decision. What school was I going to spend the next few years of my life at? When the financial aid packages arrived, I was torn between two colleges. After sitting down with my mother and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both schools, I came to my final decision. It seemed like a year ago I was imagining what college life would be like and suddenly before my eyes, I would be a college student in a matter of four months.
Have you ever been nervous and excited for something at the same time? That is how I felt during my last year of high school leading all the way up to graduation. I had never sat down and figured out what I wanted to do with my life; I would always pick something then switch to something else almost immediately. Graduation day was that epiphany for me that I really had no idea what I was going to do with my life even though I was accepted to LSU and declared a major in Computer Science.
Through out life people go through so many hardships. Whether it be good or bad there is always something that comes out of the situation. One of the most exciting but yet scariest events would be graduation. For a lot of people, graduating from high school is a goal. It takes a lot of time and effort to achieve that goal. In the long run, it opens a lot of opportunities for people to succeed. Graduation is the end of high school, and the beginning to life.
My high school graduation was one of the saddest moments of my life. Although I was excited about graduating, I did not know what I was going to do with the rest of my life. In Maya Angelou’s “Graduation,” Angelou was excited and proud of all that she had accomplished. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Late Encounter With the Enemy,” Sally Poker Sash was proud that she was finally graduating and just wanted to show that off to all the “upstarts”. In the two readings the pupils are contrasting in a few different areas, and a couple of those areas are in pride and feelings that their families have being involved in the graduation.
I opened my eyes at around 9:00 a.m.; I could not imagine that today was my graduation day. I was so excited to get ready for the day I had dreamt of for twelve years. I called my cousin Sandra to remind her to do my makeup because she is a makeup artist. I told her that I needed it to be flawless because I wanted this day to be complete in everyway. I took a shower to get ready for the hair salon because I was going to dye my hair red for the first time. I wanted a simple hairstyle; straight on top with curls at the bottom.
Having spent twelve years of my school life in just one small red brick building, the years tend to fade into each other. But the year I remember most clearly and significantly is my senior year of high school, where I finally began to appreciate what this institution offered to any student who stopped to look. Before, school had been a chore, many times I simply did not feel motivated toward a subject enough to do the homework well, and seeing the same familiar faces around ever since I was 5 years old grew very tiring soon enough. But I began to see things from a different angle once I became a senior.
