Taking my first collegiate level English course was frightening at first. I didn’t exactly know what to expect upon arriving to Professor Helms class. I know that college is all about opening up, speaking up and being outgoing, but sometimes that’s just not me. I never could express myself well in person so I would always write my feelings. This class really taught me how to organize my thoughts on paper and to switch up my style when writing.

The personal narrative set the bar for me. It was the first example I had of what to expect as a writer in this class. Instead of being given a layout to follow I sort of had to create my own. Being told to break all the rules without trying was exciting, but terrifying. I didn’t know where to go with my writing in the beginning so I had to stop and think. I needed to strategically plan each paragraph so that it would flow evenly and all of my ideas would be correctly and understandable distributed throughout. I actually had fun with this because I got to research and incorporate a timeline of historical events that interested me. Asking a big picture question in my paper made me reflect on a substantial amount of personal experience and the personal experience of those who came before me. Consequently, upon getting entangled in my writing and developing this new form of writing that I’d never done before I left a few key factors out. I was careless to provide a works cited because I got caught up in reflecting upon my own ideas. I didn’t see a need to include citations from anything else.
