The pursuit of service is an act often viewed as upstanding and righteous, however, it should be something expected from a fellow citizen. Many of my extracurricular activities include student-led organizations that focus on community service. One of the many community service project that I have conducted under my term as National Honor Society President was helping our neighboring campus, Willowridge High School, after Hurricane Harvey. Days after the disastrous hurricane struck, our chapter received notice from the district that the high school was severely damaged and that they were forced to relocate to another high school. Nearly all the items at Willowridge was destroyed, which was unfortunate since the school year had nearly begun. As I was sorting the clothes from one another, our spiritual leader was discussing the importance of charity and said “'awal maraqib, khidma”which translates to “Observe first, then serve.” Because of this I decided to visit the campus to witness the damages that were done. It was shocking to find that not only was the school destroyed, but the surrounding homes in the neighborhood was as well. Many of them left with their homes with only enough clothes that they could shove into grocery bags. It was saddening to see the faces of the dispirited students and their parents, and the need to do something merely augmented. I took this idea back to school and suggested to uplift the spirits of our community by hosting a Pizza Party in combination with a School Supply and Clothing drive.
