Philosophy of Teaching
A. Describe your personal feelings and beliefs about teaching; the awards you find in teaching and your ideas on what makes you an outstanding teacher.
Education is a rewarding and challenging field. Determination to go beyond just teaching my students the necessary content and required standards leads to my philosophy of teaching and learning. My philosophy is that all students can learn despite the obstacles that may come their way. As I entered into my 10th grade ceramics class, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher like Mrs. Johnson. As an educator, I am often stunned by the high absentee rates of the students in public education. Student attendance is directly correlated performance on high-stakes testing, academic success, and overall school success. Administrators also have to be strategic in addressing behavior that may result in Out of School Suspension. Students who are not at school can’t receive instruction. Finally, student attendance results in the school possibly losing funding and a decrease in graduation rates.
Poverty is one the world’s leading problems and the numbers are increasing every year. Schools are faced with the challenges of providing a quality education to all students with limited resources. There is a book entitled, “Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty” by George Mason. This book addresses the poverty issues like the students being assigned to low funded schools, required to learn in classes with large class sizes, and the teachers are being paid on a low pay scale. These issues raise the question of how can we equalize education for all students despite their socioeconomic status?

What can you do to strengthen and improve the teaching profession in Clayton County?
I have a passion for teaching and I am fully dedicated to improving the teaching profession in Clayton County. The goal of teaching and learning should be to give students the opportunity to develop as productive citizens, have the ability to contribute to the economic development of the world, and the ability to flourish in this diverse changing society.
Improving the teaching profession begins with finding creative ways to provide our students with a world class education. I can strengthen the teaching profession by continuing to support and train new teachers and veteran teachers throughout the year. Teachers leave the profession due to being overwhelmed with the entire teaching and learning process. It is my job to mentor and support these teachers by providing researched based strategies, providing models of quality instruction, and provide them with a viable curriculum they can follow to ensure academic success.
