A Philosophy is when someone contemplates, or wonders, about something that serves as the guide that incorporates each individual’s value and belief. Every nurse should have developed a personal philosophy at one point because it explains not only to others but also to ourselves why we do what we do. Nobody goes into nursing expecting it to be easy, it is a tough job that requires a lot of dedication which is why it is important to remember just why it is that we are doing it. Since I was fourteen I wanted to become a nurse, I have always had an overwhelming desire to help people, it is what makes me feel fulfilled, and this is the reason I decided to follow this career path. My personal philosophy on nursing is that all nurses need to want …show more content…
Nursing revolves around a commitment to helping others in need, to become the healthiest they can possibly in all aspects of their being. A nurse needs to know how to care, that means to realize what it is that matters to the patient and how to help them get it, and the basis of my philosophy is that caring is the body of nursing, and nursing is not possible without caring. Caring in a professional sense is to prevent future harm, treat those who are ill, a commitment to learning how to provide the best possible care, and to maintain the patients dignity through all aspects of the care that is being provided. Patient care should always have a holistic root, this opens the door for the patient and nurse to interact in a way that can give the nurse insight into that patients values. Patients who are comfortable in their environment heal better and faster, and one of the best ways to make a person feel comfortable in an unfamiliar place is to establish a therapeutic relationship. A therapeutic relationship is one built with trust on both sides, I think for a nurse to be able to see the situation for the patient’s point of view there needs to be a certain amount of openness in the relationship which will not develop without trust. Nursing should always be focused on what is helping the patient in the most ways, a nurse should always …show more content…
But my goal has changed, and that is to always remember that no two patients are the same and every person deserves the absolute best care I can provide no matter the circumstances, the patient will always be the focus of my care and I will try to the best of my ability to understand all values and meet every need to the best of my
According to Chitty & Black (2014) the philosophy of nursing is defined as beliefs and values that are the bases for how we think and act in our nursing careers. Similar to a nursing philosophy, a personal philosophy includes a person’s specific beliefs and values. The purpose of this paper is to start evolving my own personal nursing philosophy that contains my own beliefs and values that I will take with me throughout my career as a registered nurse.
According to American Nurses Association, Nursing is “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2016). Nursing today has evolved from the days of Florence Nightingale, spreading all over the world nurses have not only provided bedside care but have taken their voice to Congress fighting for policy changes. Nursing to me is about providing dedicated care and compassion to each and every patient I encounter as well as being a patient advocate.
A nurse is able to achieve this great balance, with the patient and self, by being conscious of the environment that surrounds them and through self awareness. For example, in the scene of an emergency, first and foremost, a nurse must check the environment before started emergent care. Both the patient and nurse must be safe for treatment to be effective. The environment is what surrounds us; our workplace, home, communities, issues we think about, the people we interact with, and the emotions associated with these interactions. The nurse knows that all of these components play an integral role in maintaining stability in a person’s life and health. The nurse assumes care of not just a disease process but of a human being as a whole; a family, a livelihood, a spirit, a person. A nurse knows that in order for holistic care to be effective, the care taker themselves should be at a point of stability as well. A true nurse knows that in order to excel you must know your limits and understand that while your main goal is to help the patient regain their strength, identity, and independence, that goal does not have to be achieved by compromising your own self, identity, and
My personal nursing philosophy and fundamental beliefs of nursing using the four meta-paradigms concepts: nature of human beings, health, environment, and nursing. First, I believe that the profession of nursing is all about the nature of human beings as people. Care involves the patient as a whole, not just as a disease process. Second, I believe that health is on the same continuum as illness. Health is more about quality of life. Third, it is also necessary to look beyond the patient to the environment in which he/she lives in. This is important because people come from different backgrounds and have their own story, we cannot separate patients from their environment because they are interrelated. Last, I think that nursing involves being with the individual patient and having an active roll with them. This process of being engaged in meaningful relationships requires we as nurses be actively
Philosophy is such a broad topic that makes it hard to fully understand and many different perspectives arise. Different field of profession has their own unique philosophy that provides big picture of what the field is about. Under each philosophy there are different paradigms that evolve and develop within philosophy. In the beginning it is hard and difficulty to fully understand and grab the concept of philosophy but with the gaining of more knowledge and experience, it becomes much clearer. Under philosophy of nursing, there are four paradigms. The four models of nursing include environment, nursing, health, and client/individual. These four help structure the philosophy of nursing.
This paper is a first attempt at forming and articulating my own philosophy of nursing.
I believe that nursing is a growing field with new advancements that will assist nurses in their line of work now and in the future. I want to take part in that change as I move forward in becoming a nurse. It has always been my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, and I am determined to accomplish this goal. I am extremely grateful for how far I have come in school and the goals I have achieved. Each day I am eager to learn and discover new things and meet new people who will help shape me into a well-rounded
My Personal Philosophy of Nursing: Nurses are responsible for life long care, continuing education, and accountability for the practice of nursing. The philosophy of nursing is what I believe to be true about nursing, and provides a basis for the profession. Without reflecting on the philosophic system within the components of nursing, patient care may generate false generalizations. This can lead to unwarranted conclusions.
In order to create a personal philosophy that is meaningful and can be carried through a person’s career; one must first start with the basis of being a nurse. According to Faye Abdellah
My goal has always been to become a nurse, and I feel I should complete this because I know I can. I want to learn and be effective at my job. I want to utilize my skills and knowledge. I want to grow and be as helpful in life as I can. Also, I want to help those that need help, to make them feel better. Through my care, I want them to know that there is a person in the world who cares about them. I feel that I can achieve this as a nurse and much more.
This paper explores the personal philosophy I have as a nursing student and what I intend to convey throughout my nursing career. A philosophy is “an analysis of the grounds and concepts expressing fundamental beliefs (Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary, n.d.). Before entering into any profession it is important to evaluate your personal philosophy about the profession, as it pertains to values and principles in which believe in to guide your practice. The field of nursing is more than treating a physiological ailment, but it involves providing quality care for the individualized needs of each patient, hence being client centered. My philosophy of nursing integrates the importance of knowledge base practice of medicine, combined with addressing holistic needs of the patient and family, including the physical, psychological, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social care (Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network, 2010). Additionally, a vital aspect of nursing is effective interpersonal relationships with other healthcare professionals to promote quality patient care. Moreover, my philosophy includes the importance the client-nurse relationship to aid in health promotion to prevent illness and increase the level of health of clients.
In my practice, I provide care to the best of my ability. I empathize with my patients when they are having a bad day and I provide laughter when it’s a good day. To go into the nursing profession it is imperative that you care for others, without care for your patients there is less chance for cure. If a patient does not feel cared for they may feel they are not important and that can cause them stress, making it more difficult to get better. My Philosophy for my nursing career always has been and will continue to be to provide the best care possible for my patients, ensuring they feel cared for and their needs are met. Just like these theorists and the Jacksonville Philosophy in which caring is at their core, I to will put caring at the core of my
For one to develop a nursing philosophy, one should first determine what philosophy means to them. As defined by Merriam Webster dictionary, philosophy is “a set of ideas about how to do something or how to live.” (Merriam-webster dictionary, 2016). Or as defined by Ayn Rand, in Philosophy, Who needs it (p.2), "Philosophy studies the fundamental nature of existence, of man, and of man 's relationship to existence. … In the realm of cognition, the special sciences are the trees, but philosophy is the soil which makes the forest possible." (Thomas, 2010). Philosophy is open to personal interpretation. By saying “philosophy is the soil which makes the forest possible” and “the special sciences are
Nursing is considered one of the most trusted professions in the world. It is an essential part in the caregiving of sick, injured, and even healthy individuals. Developing a philosophy with any profession is the beginning basis of any practice. The nursing philosophy is usually incorporated from the science of nursing. That is because the field of health care is constantly changing, which causes the need of better competence in the health field of providing caring (Flagg, 2015). With nursing it starts by the science behind it. Then along with knowledge and experiences, that is when the nursing philosophy is developed. Researching differences between new ideas and cultural differences can then expand the viewpoint into a bigger picture.
Nursing is an amazing career and I am beyond blessed and excited to go through this journey in my life to become a nurse! There is nothing I love more than doing my best to help people. I would love to continue my education someday and further myself into another career branched off of nursing. I cannot wait to see the future that is in store for me!
