I have been able to mold my own personal nursing philosophy throughout the last two years with values and beliefs that I practice by. I have grown to realize that nursing is more than simply treating an illness, it’s treating a whole person. As a new graduate telemetry nurse, I had several patients with intense time constraints and it saved time to just treat the physical illness of the patient. My nursing philosophy was based solely on treating the patient’s current health diagnosis. I quickly changed my beliefs and realized holistic nursing provides patients with improved quality of health mentally, physically, and spiritually. Patients are willing to change poor health habits when you provide quality patient care and education that is individualized based on the patient’s needs.

As nurses, we should empower patients by inspiring them to become involved participants in their own health care. In order to motivate patients I have learned through my experiences that you must understand their reasons for not wanting to change. One specific situation I encountered with a patient allowed me to understand the importance of the combination between patient advocacy and individualized patient-centered care. The patient was a female in her mid twenties with a history of asthma and smoking. The patient was in and out of the hospital frequently and with each visit neither the doctor nor the nurse took the time to sit down and talk about smoking cessation and the reasoning behind her not wanting to quit. I used holistic communication tools and was able to learn that only was she afraid of failure, she lacked the family support needed to make such a big change in her life. At home, she was surrounded by smokers, and had no one to support her while trying to quit. After determining the reason, I was able to provide her with advice, strategies, and support
