My personal learning philosophy will integrate brain-based learning. Brain-based learning strategies refer to teaching, lesson plans, and education programs to inspire creative thinking, emotional growth, and cognitive development. These strategies are a wonderful resource for students and educators alike to influence positive learning. All students are different and there are many techniques that can help nurture learning. Brain-based learning strategies facilitate collaboration, positive time management, and offer comfort and hands on experience in classrooms. As brain-based learning grows, more information and ideas will be prevalent, and it is important to be open to these changes to offer the best educational opportunities for all students. My goal as an educator is to offer the best possible teaching methods to allow students to learn most efficiently. With innovations in education constantly occurring, it is important to understand what methods are garnering results. Since the early 1980s, there have been studies on a new trend called brain-based learning. Brain-based learning is an informative set of principles to help students learn and how to reach goals. Brain Based Learning itself, is an idea that connects the brain, body, and mind. However, brain based learning has only recently gained widespread acceptance, as recently as the 1980s, with a new focus being made on cognitive science. According to Ronald Jean Degan, “The brain processes different types of learning through different pathways.” (p.16) The brain’s memorization of information is connected directly to attention spans. If a student is either stressed out, uncomfortable, or suffering from distractions, their learning will be hindered. As brain-based learning grows, more information and ideas will be prevalent, and it is important for me to be open to these changes to offer the best educational opportunities for all of my students. While it is a relatively new subject, there are some excellent scholarly sources to find information on that will do nothing but educate and help promote brain-based learning. The brain based learning principles can be nurtured by educators using very simple strategies, including classroom set ups, assignment and class schedules, and even opportunities for hands on learning. Understanding the benefits of brain-based learning will redefine our education systems and eventually provide students with the best opportunities to reach their full educational potential.
