Employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 16 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. (Source) With a substantial amount of newly named R.N.’s each year, all of them will have something different to bring to the nursing profession. The purpose of this paper is to reflect on my own personal journey to the nursing profession, in ways such as what brought me to it, how my values relate to the values of nursing and also my own goals and how they correlate to nursing. Altruism is a concern for the welfare and well being of others, (Essentials, 2008). I relate with altruism in my everyday life. For the past four years I have worked at a retirement home for nearly 4 years, I wouldn't trade the experiences I have had for anything. The residents mean so much to me and its such a great feeling taking care of them and ensuring that they get the quality care they deserve. Even my coworkers, we have such a positive work environment where we look after each other and keep one another always on our toes. Autonomy is the right to self­ determination, (Essentials, 2008). Autonomy is something that is so important, I think that people should be allowed to pick and chose what they want to be done for themselves. No one else should be able to chose it, except for them. Human Dignity is respect for the inherent worth and uniqueness of individuals and populations, (Essentials, 2008). I relate to human dignity on a personal level, I go to therapist on a weekly basis and it has taught me so much about life. It has taught me that everyone has a story, their own, individual, story. That is something you need to respect enough to not go around telling every person you meet. On a different spectrum I have schooling and career goals. These goals are what keep me going because I know this is what I am destined to do. I am the first one in my family to ever step foot in a secondary school type setting, so they all think I am a bit ambitious for having such high goals. My career goals involve me becoming a nurse practitioner with a specialty in pediatric endocrinology. To obtain these goals in life I will need to first gain my bachelors degree in Nursing. I plan to do this by doing the best I possibly can in all of my classes. I will hopefully then find a job as a nurse in the pediatrics field at either Sanford or Avera. After a few years of experience I will go back to school and achieve my masters degree and get specialized in my chosen
