My Experience

Because nursing school is incredibly demanding and difficult, I did not expect anything less shadowing a nurse for the first time in a medical surgical unit. Before walking into the hospital, I felt terrified of all the things that could come my way on my first day. Nevertheless, my nerves suddenly disappeared and I instantly felt a connection to Swedish American Hospital. Not only did I have a connection with the hospital itself, but I gained a connection with everyone around me. The facial expressions and attitudes I received with my uniform on made me feel what I’ve always wanted to feel, that nursing is the most trusted and ethical profession out there. I felt praised, honored, and respected for being such a role model to not only the healthcare field, but society. Walking into the medical surgical unit was nothing short of a dream. The one personal experience that has always given me a passion to pursue nursing is when I was taking care of my grandmother who was suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. My grandmother always told me how I was an amazing caregiver to her and knew from that point on that I wanted to work in the medical field. There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent hours sitting at a hospital bedside with my grandma, struggling for years. And as I sat with her trying to keep her spirits up, the nurses who cared for her always drew my admiration. I feel there are a handful of truly inspirational professions and nursing is without doubt one of them. I was then able to see how much nurse’s impact patients. Nurses provide an invaluable service to society, and to be part of that group has been an ambition of mine. My impression of nursing has grown stronger and I cannot wait to graduate and take care of my own
