“De donde viene su agua potable,” I asked. The eighty-something El Salvadorian said he obtained his drinking water from the river. It was the same river he and his neighbors bathed in, and the same river receiving run-off of excrement washed down the hillside along with pesticides from the local coffee plantation. I cringed at the thought of the numerous toxic and infectious agents lurking in every sip. My mind rushed through my knowledge base of water quality and safety. So far removed from safe water & water distribution systems, the thought of cross-connections & backflow was absolutely inconsequential. Only basic camping treatments like boiling and iodine would be applicable. From my experiences, my interest in health issues has been sparked and now I need the academic and professional training to become a leader in public health. My education and professional background have adequately prepared me to excel in graduate studies at SUNY Albany, although my circuitous path has encountered a few bumps. During my undergraduate education I did not recognize the importance of performing well academically as I felt no strong passion in a particular field and lacked direction as reflected in classes taken and inconsistent grades. I studied Earth Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz. While I valued the science background and awareness of the environment my studies gave me, I knew I did not want to pursue a career in this field. I am not proud of my previous undergraduate performance and mistakes, but from them I have learned hard lessons and am now very focused and ambitious. A couple of years after graduation while working at a professionally and intellectually unfulfilling job, following a close friend’s cancer ... ... middle of paper ... ...ality, sanitation, and infectious disease issues in developing countries gave me valuable insight into past issues in the U.S. and potential health problems associated with Central American immigrants. With a Master of Public Health I hope to use my knowledge of environmental health and toxicology in practical applications. I would like to continue on to medical school so that I may understand contemporary health issues from the assessment of an entire population to treating an individual patient, specifically targeting marginalized populations. This will prepare me for boundless opportunities for a career with a non-profit agency, several government entities, or with an academic hospital. It would be an honor to study in such a prestigious institution as SUNY Albany. I look forward to working with your renowned faculty and representing your school in my efforts.
Ever since I was a little kid I loved the performing arts and I never thought that I would eventually fall in love with science . After an intense and challenging year of Chemistry my sophomore year, I was hesitant and nervous in signing up for my junior year science class. Toward the end of my sophomore year my chemistry teacher, Mr. Bowditch, told me he thought I would do well in Advanced Placement Environmental Science. I was in a state of disbelief because I was struggling trying to get a C in Chemistry and I was thinking how was I supposed to take AP Environmental Science class. After a conversation with my parents, they had persuaded me to sign up and we agreed if i didn't like it or it was too hard I would be able to drop the class.
At an early stage in my medical school in Iraq, I realized the great positive impact of public health on the community in health education orientation, disease prevention and health well-being as a general and what affirmed it later, my clinical practice as a physician in Iraq first then Dubai later. Public health was a major integral block in my clinical practice to educate the people towards a healthier lifestyle and implementing the preventative screening measures necessary to get a healthy, well protected community. After moving to the United States, I took the initiative to familiarize myself with the US healthcare system by doing many clinical rotations in different family practices and pediatric clinics in Houston, TX. After these rotations, I was enamored with the delivery of public health measures in each clinic, according to the US public health standards. My fondness for public health drove me to get an opportunity to be a health educator
Measures to expand and improve public delivery systems of drinking water, contributing to a reduction in morbidity and mortality associated with enteric diseases, because these diseases are associated directly or indirectly with providing substandard water or poor provision water. Currently, 1,400 million people lack access to safe drinking water and nearly 4,000 billion lack adequate sanitation. According to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of diseases are transmitted through contaminated water.
Having been born and raised in India gives me a wide understanding and perspective of the plight of the undeserved and vulnerable population. I moved to the US only in 2003 and have spent all my life in India prior to that. My own personal experience makes me very familiar with the different tropical diseases and how poverty and the lack of infrastructure affect the treatment of these diseases in those countries.
Many people grab a water bottle to go as they head to life as normal, others in developing countries spend their lives searching for water that is rarely found. Even if they do obtain water, it is seldom clean and usually comes with the risk of disease. As more developed countries pay a dollar or so for a bottle of water, others in less fortunate places worship water as if it is gold. As many children around the world attend a privileged school everyday, the idea of missing school due to water-borne illness never crosses their mind, yet for those in less fortunate countries, it is a gift to have the strength and health to attend school on a regular basis.
In the future, I wish to obtain an occupation in the medical field. I would like to start out by working for a Biology major and working in a premedical field in college where I can use my interest in medicine and my curiosity for knowledge to gain insight that would be needed to become a helpful doctor in the medical field. As I move along in my career, I would like to work my way through the pathway so that I can expand my skills in healing others, such as diagnostic abilities, effectively giving treatment and so on. I want to learn as much as possible so I can fulfill my ultimate dream of helping others that need answers to their medical problems and so that more people can live happily and healthily in the world. I hope to bring happiness to others and allowing people to live comfortably.
I have an unquenchable desire to learn and develop the mind. I believe, one of the greatest way to better care for families, communities and the population was to pursue the Master of Public Health Program with a concentration in Community Health Education. With the Master of Public Health degree, I can better understand how to implement, plan and evaluate health promotion and disease prevention programs to better serve the communities. I want to get a master’s degree to pursue my career interest more in-depth. Choosing to pursue the MPH program is a lifelong self-fulfillment, because there is no greater satisfaction than knowing I am going to wake up every day to improve the lives of people all around the world. Higher education is rewarding and can open the door to greater opportunities. I aspire a career with a purpose, that is why I chose to complete my graduate
Clean water is needed for good human and animal health, but as DoSomething.org states, over 1 billion people worldwide don’t have a means of getting clean drinking water, an...
I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.
As a freshman, I was conflicted about what I wanted out of college. At the time, I naively believed that I would major in Neuroscience and Arabic while completing plenty of biomedical research on the side. Perhaps I would also sign up for a few clubs here and there and thus produce the perfect resume for medical school. In the following year, I realized that my heart was not into the breakneck agenda I planned for myself and I started to reevaluate just what exactly I wanted to pursue in my undergraduate experience. With the aid of many advising sessions I gained a clearer picture of my passions, which as I had come to realize, were what I truly wanted to work towards. Among my interests is Global Health -- in particular, I wish to learn more
I am certain that a master’s in public health from a university such as the University of Illinois at Springfield program will provide the knowledge and skills that will mold me as an individual to work best with the public and sequentially create a justifiable link between the public and the health services, refining the lifestyle of thousands of
Have you ever had to walk miles away just to get clean drinking water, or don’t even not have access to clean drinking water? People all over the world, even in North America, don’t have access to clean drinking water or have to walk very far just to drink water. The main areas where this problem is prominent is in third world countries, and this is due to the lack of money and sanitation (Millions Lack Safe Water). Due to this lack of sanitation, water borne diseases can grow and infect people who consume it. Clean water is very important for life, and within this paper I will explain why we need it, how it can affect us, and what it will take to obtain clean water.
My International background, cultural competency, multilingual abilities, and academic aptitude will aid me in successfully completing the Graduate program of Public Health. I am confident that this program will provide me with necessary tools and education to successfully execute and construct policies that would benefit both local and international communities. Through my Medical Scribe experiences, EMT work, Undergraduate coursework, helped me gain in depth knowledge and different perspectives into the health care industry. I believe that University of New England is the best conduit to pursue and accomplish my academic and career goals.
The Schulich Interfaculty MPH Program emphasizes public health leadership, policy and sustainability. What are your career aspirations in public health and how will our MPH facilitate these aspirations?
Physicians and veterinarians are able to help individuals with problems and diseases. But with public health, one would be enabled to help both humans and animals on a large scale, even at global level. Today, I firmly believe Public Health is one of the most crucial aspects of Medicine. It, indeed, can help prevent and bring solutions to health issues like no other field. Furthermore Veterinary Public Health is the most right choice for me. With the knowledge I gain in the Veterinary Public Health specialization (VPH) as an option within the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program, I would be able to fulfil my dreams of striving for a healthy society. My passion, academic background, work experience, and cultural competency will contribute to the student body and graduate Veterinary Public Health
