Reflection On Racism

Throughout this semester there were plenty of topics from different sections that made me change my outlook on racism. Before this class I know that all races, including minorities, can be racist, but it was something that I hadn’t fully understood until now. I was well aware that racism was still something that happened today, but I what I was not aware of is how not only is it a frequent thing today but it’s also involves violence along with it.
At the beginning of this class we watched a video named True Colors- ABC Primetime Live. This video made me realized just how sad and different the life of a minority is compared to that of a white person. The video is about two males with the same values and same social status, only different is their skin color. Throughout the video it is demonstrated how Glenn, black male, is discriminated against while John, white male, is not discriminated against. I found it hard to believe how this happens today!
I as a minority was really touched by this video. There was a part in where Glenn was walking through a retail store and he was followed by the stores associates. Not only was he followed by associates who constantly keep checking up on him just to make sure he wasn’t stealing, but also when he seemed to be interested …show more content…

I was not aware that behind racism were things like identity, trying to figure out who one is. Watching the True Colors video made me notice how there’s a preferential treatment to those who are on the privileged race. The minorities on the other hand are in a disadvantage and are treated poorly. The Markus reading helped me understand how before racism can take place we have to look at the small things, such as how the race and ethnicity could have been the cause for them to form a sense of privilege in someone’s identity that makes them act on an act of
