Memoir I arrived an hour early to the first practice. The grass was green with freshly painted white lines covering the field every five yards. There was a smell of ingrained sweat that filled my nose as I humbly marched into the locker for the first time. It was my first day of high school football, my first day of playing tackle football, my first day of becoming a man. As soon as I got all my gear strapped on and fitted correctly, groups of teammates shuffled out with me towards the practice fields. I had never been so excited for anything before. I love football. The thrill, excitement, and chance at becoming great is what drove me out of bed at 6:30 each morning to get a lift in. While we walked, some of my freshman teammates were talking about what position they were going to play and how they thought the season was going to go. All I could think of was working my way onto the JV team and possibly getting to play with the older guys. I wanted to get better, play harder competition, and become as good as I possibly could be. These guys were fast, they could hit hard, and all were equally as strong as I. I was nervous at first because I did not want to make any mistakes. The Steelers were founded by Arthur J. Rooney on July 8, 1933. The Steelers are the 7th oldest team in the NFL. They also have won 6 super bowls which is the most out of all the other NFL teams. In 1970 is when the Steelers started one of the greatest streaks ever! They earned 8 consecutive playoff berths. The Steelers have one superbowls back to back twice the only team to ever do that! The list of Pittsburgh Steelers heroes of the 1970s is long but it begins with Head Coach Chuck Noll who took control of the team in 1969. Amazing players such as defensive tackle Joe Greene, linebackers Jack Ham and Jack Lambert, quarterback Terry Bradshaw, cornerback Mel Blount and running back Franco Harris were the backbone of a team that many insist was the finest ever in pro football. The first practice hit you hard we started off with sprints and that was awful people throwing up all around me and I can’t catch my breath but you keep pushing it. I think that was the turning point for me I knew that a lot of people looked at me like small kid that shouldn’t play but after beating them in sprints they saw I was not going to give up. Later on that season it was our 4 game in the season we were going up against Carbondale and we are only up by 6 on defense one of our players go down. I just got off the field on offense they said we need someone I ran to them said I will go in they gave me the nod. When I got on the field it was strange because I never played defense at the time I was just thinking just hit the kid with the ball and you will do fine. The ball snapped so I started back peddling and watching the line men to see if they fire off the line if so it was a run if they backed peddled it was a pass. They fired off the line it was a run so my next thought was where but at soon I was thinking that I saw the running back was coming my way so pushed the receiver off me so it was just me and him. Americans have known for more than forty years that alcohol damages the evolving brain of children. Americans have known for more than fifty years that cigarette smoking is harmful for the body. Americans have known these things, and we have done things to regulate it; the drinking age is twenty-one, smoking in enclosed public spaces is illegal. We have given up old practices for the safety and betterment of the world; with the exception of football. It has become clear that repetitive hits to the head in contact sports like football place athletes at high risk of permanent brain damage, yet parents still let their children play football. Parents should not allow their children to play football because their brain is not yet fully developed;
Once again, after a successful season, Shadle Park was defeated by a Big 9 school in the first game of the regional tournament. This reoccurring event has led many to believe that the four year football program puts GSL students at a disadvantage compared to other districts. A junior high school football program would not only increase the competitiveness of the students but also have more important consequences.
Sadly, my family was going through financial struggles, forcing me out of the school zone I was destined to attend. When I discussed the situation wih the high school coaches they told me they would pick me up from my new house and take me to school every day; with the condition that I’d play football for them all throughout high school. Even though this was illegal I continued to go ahead and accept the offer. My first year of high school was so exciting that it went by in the blink of an eye. Sophomore year came and the clock ticked closer and closer to when everything would change. I started in varsity as a corner back but soon would have big shoes to fill as the team’s quarterback. Not only did this require skill and hard work but the ability and qualities of a leader as well. Ultimately, playing this position helped me acquire traits that would soon be necessary for success. Imagine a small town with green trees and windy roads slowly fading into the "dobes" of the desert that surround its southern border. Along with the desert is a vast mountain range that snuggles against its northern and eastern borders. The heart of this small town is its high school, which resides on the outer edge of the town where the green stops and the dry "dobes" begin. The school is completely surrounded by dry plains that stretch as far as you can see except for a small oasis of green grass. This small oasis of grass is known to many as the practice field. To those who are merely passing by, it looks like a dying piece of land that has been forgotten. What they don't know is the reason behind its dreadful appearance. The abuse it takes is from the pounding of hard spikes and heavy bodies that fall on it day in and day out. These, along with the pungent pools of water, have contributed to the field's downfall.
First my argumentative sentence would be, some people do not believe that playing professional sports is just too risky for the athletes' health, while others believe that the athlete knows the risk, so we should just let them play. It was two days until the first game of my last high school football season. My team and I were going to play Bayfield, a battle we had persistently prepared for since the last game of our junior year. The sun was beating on my pads, radiating the heat to make practice seem even worse. I was exhausted and looking forward to the end of my last sweat poring practice for the week. Our team was repetitively executing plays to make sure they were like second nature to us on Friday.
The wheels on the bus went round and round, all the way to Paonia. The ten mile trip seemed to last forever. Whoosh, Whoosh was the only sound could be heard as the wheels ran through the new rain puddles that were created earlier that day. It was dead silent, you could have heard a pin drop. We all knew what was at stake. For each of us it was a different thing, but on both sides of the ball we knew that in order to have bragging rights for the rest of our lives this would be the game that we would have to win. Every other game that season didn't matter as long as we won this game. Every hit would be remembered on those days when we would be sitting down as old men drinking beer or coffee. There would be talk about when we flew around the field with each other who hit who and who knocked who on their can. The bus was not a sleeping silence, it was more of a tense silence. The type of silent there is when a group of civilians enter the surrounding of another expecting to leave with something they shouldn't. The main thing we were expecting to leave with was respect. Its all about respect. This was the type of game that every hit and every block counted. We knew that we will be partying with them the next spring, and we wanted bragging rights. That was the type of silence that it was, all the way to Paonia.
It was a gloomy day, Hurricane Hermine blew past Greenville leaving behind scattered puddles across campus as well as lingering clouds blocking most of the sunlight. The air was cool yet there was a certain electricity present that made that day feel less dreary. It was the first home college football game, East Carolina University was going to play against Western Carolina University. The two institutions haven’t played each other since 1981 and it was sure to be an interesting match up, football season was back in full swing and this match would define the success to come for the home team.
