English Class Reflection

Walking into my first day of English class I knew I faced many challenges. English 1102 is a higher level course, which meant more was going to be expected of me. I had the basics of writing a well developed essay, but I encountered many of my difficulties writing a well written essay. Getting to read many literature books, have in class discussions, and exploring different works of literature helped me to think out of my normal thinking capacity and learn new things. I learned how to think critically, have a passion for reading, and write better essays.

Thinking beyond my normal capacity is not what I was used to coming into English 1102. I did not think I had to put extra work into something at the time I thought had no meaning. I learned to think beyond what I would normally, and I got to compare and contrast other works of literature from my point of view. My favorite thing to read is poems, because a poem can have different meanings, and it is up to the person to think beyond to know what the author meant or felt while writing the poem. I read the minimum I was required just to get by, but little did I know I was hurting my vocabulary. Being able to read in class, and at home, gave me the opportunity to read the literature and walk into class the next day ready for in-class discussion. I did not know how much I was into feeling a character’s emotions, or being able to imagine myself as if I was there in the book. My favorite story in the class was “Two Kinds”. The story meant a lot to me because as I read the story I could somehow relate to the characters, and I found myself wanting to read more pieces of literature similar to “Two Kinds”. Whenever I have free time I would read something whether if it was a school book, or a book at home. Reading more this semester has strengthened my vocabulary, and made me more confident reading aloud when I have
