Importance Of Observation To Laing Middle School

The first day I went to Laing Middle School I was very confused on how to get into the school. There are two different entrances one in the front and another in the back. I eventually made my way to the back of the school and found the office. The doors were locked and I had to be buzzed into the school. Once into the school I had to check myself in showing ID. After I was checked in I was able to walk to my classroom for observation. The hallways were very open and had tables and chairs where the students get sit and talk or do work. Each hallway was for a specific grade level. For example, all the 6th grade classes were in the same hallway. Having the classrooms all in the same hall can make it easier for students to switch classes. While I was observing Laing Middle School I observed two different classes, a 6th grade Social Studies class and a 6th grade Math class. Each class had a different set up and teaching style. When the class did get too loud for the teacher she would count down from five to get them quiet. Each student in the school had their very own iPad to use for school purposes. When the students walked into the classroom the teacher had them use their iPads to do bell ringer work. Later the teacher also had the students use the iPads to take a group quiz. The teacher incorporated the iPads into the classroom in several different ways she used an audio book and projected it onto the board but the students also followed along on their iPads. Picard, Martin, an Tsao (2014) states “ iPads are now a familiar feature in classrooms around the world, regarded as a promising tool for supporting teaching and learning”.
