“Oh, San Francisco, you never let me down” I said after watching a group of young kids break dancing down on the end of Pier 39. Tourists were coming from all directions to throw a few bucks in the enormous bucket labeled “tips”. My friend Joey couldn’t believe his eyes going on to say “they make more tips in one show then I do working all day!” Coming from the Bay area, San Francisco has always been my favorite get away. I’m able to spend hours in The City with no prior planning at all. I love San Francisco for its amazing scenery, outstanding choices in food, as well as its unique culture and people.

Being right on the water, San Francisco is home to some of the greatest sea food around. It has exciting chain restaurants such as The Hard Rock Café, Bubba Gumps, and of course the Rainforest café. There’s also plenty of mom and pop restaurants that are exclusive to San Francisco like the pubs on the corner and the late night pizza spot. My favorite place to go is to the Fog Harbor Fish House on pier 39 on Embarcadero Street. It’s got fresh fish like salmon and Mahi Mahi caught from earlier that day and has spectacular views of the bay bridge since it’s on the second level of the pier. The waiters wear a white button up shirt and black tie, white cloth napkins and a nice white tablecloth. I always order some fresh crispy calamari rings that I drench in lemon and dip in marinara sauce, followed up with the sea food pasta with fresh halibut, clams, creamy alfredo sauce and an enormous piece of garlic bread. Moving to a new community is exciting, especially one that’s as vibrant as Costa Mesa. Its Spanish name reflects its geographical feature, literally a coastal tableland that affords views of the Pacific Ocean, just one mile from its southernmost border. It is an ideal location with easy access to nearby Irvine and Anaheim, and only 37 miles for Los Angeles and less than 90 miles to San Diego – great for commuting to employment centers, shopping, entertainment, recreation and cultural attractions. Costa Mesa’s proximity to the Santa Ana River made it historically important to earlier settlers and cattle ranchers. Today, that same advantageous location makes Costa Mesa a major player in Orange County, attracting businesses and visitors. It is celebrated as “The City of the Arts,” the capitol of the actions sports industry, and home of Orange County’s top 20 revenue-generating retail centers.
“This world is but a canvas to our imagination” (Thoreau). The world is quite literally a canvas for graffiti artists, and these two opinion editorials cover the desire for this medium of art to be appreciated and showcased. Eric Felisbret wrote “Legal Venues Celebrate Graffiti as an Art Form” which was published on July 16, 2014 in the New York Times. Felisbret’s article was about creating more legal venues to showcase graffiti. Kathy Grayson wrote “L.A. Graffiti Exhibition, ‘Art in the Streets,’ belongs in N.Y.C.,” which was published on June 26, 2011 in the New York Daily News. Grayson wrote her article to persuade readers that “Art in the Streets” belongs in New York. The articles were simultaneously the same and very different in their content. Even though the specific messages were diverse the purpose was to persuade the discourse community, who value law, education, and their community, into having graffiti displayed as art. These two
This paper will discuss the many unique aspects of Oakland, California. Divided into five major parts, Oakland is a very diverse city. The five major parts include: Downtown Oakland which is located in the heart of the city, East Oakland which consists of the majority of the city, West Oakland, North Oakland, and the Oakland hills where the terrain is quite different from other parts of the city. While many may perceive the population to mainly consist of African Americans and Whites, there is a significant growing population of Latinos, and Asians. The topics covered in this paper will shed light on the city of Oakland itself, and discuss the unique city that it is. I will also give my personal experience and perception on the city, after living there for 16 years of my life.
Street art and graffiti has the capability to change lives, as is seen in documentary “Exit through the Gift Shop.” In the film the audience meets Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant currently residing in the United States, and learns an odd habit he acquired at a young age. He always had to have a video camera rolling; he was constantly documenting his life. He was obsessed with remembering everything that happened in his life so he got every part of his life recorded.
Los Angeles is a city that resonates with glamour and opportunity. Its attraction as the place to live in is everlasting. It attracts immigrants such as from China, Korea, and Mexico. In fact, according to one of the authors of the assigned readings, Ray Bradbury, Little Tokyo in Los Angeles is the “largest Japanese community outside Japan.” Los Angeles offers the dream of what most people yearn for. Another author from the readings, Wanda Coleman expresses her amazement with Los Angeles in her excerpt “L.A. Love Cry” (1996). She uses the simile of fast food to describe the lovely city, “Loving you is to love fast food.” (21) Coleman seems really to enjoy living in Los Angeles as she continues, “to eat with one hand while maneuvering steering wheel with the other, working that arm rest” (21). Los Angeles does not only offer the good life and multiculturalism, but it is also the city of hope.
Gilded age San Francisco stood as a beacon for travelers bound for the western coast of the United States. The most prominent city in the developing west during the latter parts of the nineteenth century and the opening of the twentieth, San Francisco encompassed a range of conflicting identities. This time period marked a transitory stage in the development of San Francisco, evolving from a booming “frontier town” to a “civilized metropolis,” the emerging San Franciscan identity retained qualities from both poles of this spectrum. Chinatown, existing as a city within the city, shared this relationship of extremes with San Francisco. To travelers visiting San Francisco, Chinatown was a necessary stop. The writings in travelogues published during this period describe Chinatown through a mix of revulsion and curiosity, its inhabitants virtuous and sub-human. In short, within the developing city of San Francisco, an expedition into Chinatown remained a visceral exploration of a foreign and exciting environment.
California is full of beauty, a beauty that is constantly glamourized, and falsely advertised. There is a constant battle against the stereotypes presented in the media, which have created a false image of this massive state. The media presents an insufficient amount of information about California that impedes the outsiders to fully understand the beauty of this state. The media focuses on the tourist attractions of California, like, beaches, Los Angeles, Hollywood, and San Francisco. Although these attractions are appealing, the spotlight should also highlight the impoverished cities, the cultural and geographical diversity. Within the last few years, graffiti has been deemed an acceptable and tasteful genre of art. Long gone are the days where the spray can belonged exclusively to the local delinquent. From the past to present, there has been a shift in how street art is recognized by the general public and the government. Laws and policies are being put into place that both defend and threaten the promulgation of this creative medium. By both protecting and prohibiting, the government displays an inconsistent and confusing relationship with street art. When art is so subjective, it can become challenging to delineate the fine line between vandalism and creativity. This essay will discuss the changing public perception of graffiti, the trademark and copyright battles between graffiti artists and property owners, the categorization of street art as an artform, and the beneficial aspects of commissioned street murals.
My dream place would be a house on a Galapagos Island. My land will be located on the Isabella Island. It will be nice and relaxing because it has a constant weather all that time, perfect environment. Also I will have a nice 2 floor cabin. The cabins will look like the ones that you see in forest. My whole family will live there after I am 75. But before that I will spend my time gathering all the money to buy a piece of land, a plane, a boat, and some vegetable seed (lot of them). I want my dream place to be nice and relaxing where you can enjoy the environment and very peaceful weather.

It expands all the way to the ricotta and truffle egg toast in Little Italy. The shrimp dumplings, rice noodle egg rolls and Xiaolongbao crafted over in Chinatown. Going all the way over to La Villita, or Little Village to sample the chilaquiles and the Taco de Soya pollo. Then we have Polish pierogies and Cuban coffee right downtown. But, it’s not only the food that is to be tasted it’s also adventure.You need that taste to venture out to Chinatown and to explore the different parts of the unkown. That 's the taste that probably brought most of us out-of-towners here a taste for something new and different you can rarely get anywhere else.
The arts have influenced my life in amazing ways. Throughout my life, art has been the place I run to and my escape from the world. As I’ve grown older, art has become so much more than that. Every piece of art I create is a journey into my soul. It’s a priceless way to deal with my emotions and my struggles. I create art not only because I enjoy it and because I want to, but because I have to. Somewhere deep inside there is a driving force, urging me to put my heart down on paper. I become emotionally attached to each of my pieces because they are like dashes on the wall marking my growth. Each one is the solution to a problem I have dealt with and overcome.
My favorite place as a child was County Park Lake. When we had family picnics because we all got together and there was great food and kids playing and the adults playing horse-shoes and could tell there was love for one another. There was no other place like this when I was a child. Some of my fondest memories was at that picnic site we should all have memories likes those.
