Ayauna Sumpter Family History Assignment Customs, traditions, rules, and religion these are a few of the main things that make families so unique. Being that these 4 components is what makes up one big family there is way that these compartments intertwine, I am only 19 years old, and I 'm pretty sure my family history can go on forever, but I decided to expand my knowledge based on my immediate family members. The first rule would be my mannerism. My family has always taught me to be respectful to adults and make sure I say "please" and "thank you". Luckily enough we weren 't forced to say the "yes ma 'am" or " yes sir" when speaking to adults. There are times where I would call my friends out on not being respectful because I am so used to being around people who are polite and show respect to their parents and even strangers. This rule sticks with me through my everyday life and something I 'll never forget to do. When I am around my grandmother she always asks us " Did you say, your grace?" Even if I wanted to forget I knew there was someone in the back of my head to remind me to say my grace. Ethnicity: During this project, I can honestly say I learned the differences between race and ethnicity. I am embarrassed that I didn 't know there was a difference between now, but I 'm glad I got to read about what they both mean. Unfortunately, when I asked my grandmother where our ethnicity comes from she didn 't have any answers for me. She told me that if my great grandmother were alive she would be able to tell me all about where my ancestors come from. There are times I wish I could meet my great-grandmother, but instead I settle for listen to all those amazing stories about how she kept everyone in check.

Since the beginning of time, mankind began to expand on traditions of life out of which family and societal life surfaced. These traditions of life have been passed down over generations and centuries. Some of these kin and their interdependent ways of life have been upheld among particular people, and are known to contain key pieces of some civilizations.
Each ethnicity has its own unique characteristics and knowledge from religion, language, food, art, music, and social traits; this is their cultural make- up. This Heritage tool is used to obtain a small fragment of family history, to help analyses their culture. The three people interviewed with the Heritage tool are from three distinctively different backgrounds. The first is from the rural Midwest, second is from Barbados and the third is from.
Firstly, I plan to explore how race has influenced my life. My mother is of Hispanic, and Irish decent whereas my father is of African decent. One of my earliest experiences with racism came from my mother’s side of the family. My grandmother would often say awful things about my dad to my brother and me when we visited and my parents were not around. She never hid how she felt about my parent’s relationship from us. My grandmother was opposed to my mother’s relationship with my father solely because he was, according to her, a “nigger” and of a different ethnic background and was not good enough for her daughter and that my mother was bringing shame to the family. My grandmother never accepted us whole-heartedly as her grandchildren compared to how she treated our other cousins simply because of their race and their complexion because they looked more like her side of the family than we did.
I talked about a lot about race, ethnicity, and the different movies we watched in this paper. I believe that continuing on in this class will help myself get a better understanding of different races and cultures, which will make me more knowledgeable in the future and better me in the long run. I cannot wait to see what we are going to learn about in the weeks to come!

Mom, Dad and two brothers. Her sister and her are currently away from college. A few of the main questions I wanted to ask her before asking about her brothers were questions about her family. I wanted her opinion of her family. These questions consisted of what are the family strengths and weaknesses, who has more parental roles in the family, and what is a typical day like in her family.
Upon entering the class I was anxious, curious, and also oblivious to the ideas I would be encountering. Like other students who had not previously spent time discussing topics of race and ethnicity, I myself had nervous tendencies in assuming that such a class may not strengthen my understanding of ethnic and race relations. I realized I knew little about race or ethnicity, and even the possible similarities or differences. However, I welcomed the opportunity to further discover the possibilities of the class. Throughout my life I have heard a wide range of stories from my parents. When putting this assignment together I have put these stories into account. Randall Bass, educator of English at Georgetown University, concurs that stories shape individuals ' personalities. Bass expresses that, "People infer their feeling of personality from their way of life, and societies are frameworks of conviction that decide how individuals experience their lives" (Bass 1). Social stories about family history, religion, nationality, and legacy impact individuals ' conduct and convictions. Personalities of diverse individuals originate from their societies. Narrating starts at home. Stories associate individuals to their frameworks of convictions. They shape individuals ' lives by giving them a model of how to live. My family and I live by the phrase, treat people the way you want to be treated, which was a quote my elementary principal said each morning announcement. So I live by the moral, Being just and fair. This improved my speaking skills by making me think before I speak. It also helped my family not discriminate people by how they act around other people. We value each other, thought that we should value others too.
I try to live every day of my life by thinking of others before myself. When I treat others with respect and kindness I try to be a good example to others, especially my own family. My parents, other family members, and church have all taught me to show kindness and respect toward others. I believe in living by the Golden Rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
They always told me to respect others no matter who they were, if I knew them or not, it 's a sign of respect from me and to the other person. It will show that I did grow up with a good education and it will also talk good about my parents. They always told me and kept reminding me that actions speak louder than words, to always show something that I was made of and not something that I 'm not. Hearing other people out, it shows your interests or even if you 're not, but try to show it because it 's showing respect to that person. Being respectful is a big part of me, I can never forget that, because if I want to be respected, I respect other people, to treat them the same way as I want to be treated, even if I think that I 'm not going to receive it back, and if I don 't, it shows that I 'm the bigger person. I guess that showing gratitude was one of the first thing that my parents showed me when I was younger, I always remember when I would receive something they would whisper in my ear or tell me to say "thank you" same thing if I wanted something, to say "please". These customs must be a part of who every person is. This should be, not only because it is polite or correct, but because we are humans we have feelings, we have a dignity that deserves respect despite anything—respect. Learning manners at home helps an individual have a stronger foundation on what is correct to do based on respect and discipline that apply to social manners that contribute to the social development of society. In the end, as one grows and matures with time, it is in our hands the decision we make everyday. We choose and control what we do or say and it is up to us whether we want to keep a chaotic manners-free society or make the difference and
