1. My working class background and my family have shaped my own personal values. Growing up in a Hispanic culture, I have cultivated the belief in cherishing, nurturing, and protecting those who are family. I believe this value came from my father. He has always been a great supporter after his father passed away, at the age of 18. When my grandfather passed, he took the role in being the provider. Him being the oldest, he worked long hours to ensured his brothers and sisters had the things they needed. By this, my father learned the value of building family unity. After finding out my mother was expecting, he made it all possible in having a stable home for us. He bought his first home and would put aside money for his future family. Most importantly, he made sure my siblings and I all had a great relationship by respecting one another, helping each other in times of need, and supporting our choices in life. As a family, my father believes in establishing and maintaining family unity, therefore, I have always valued the importance of taking care of care of my sibling and my parents. The value of protecting members of my family is meaningful to me because my family is who I turn to when I am coping through difficult times. We have respect for one another, and we could never intentionally hurt each other due to our strong bond. In addition, I was taught the values of not resorting to violence when solving issues, but instead learning the value of walking away from negative situations. All in all, my family are who keep me moving forward, and I am immensely proud of this value because my family remains …show more content…
I strongly believe that it is my passion in becoming a social worker, but my ability to work with individuals who abuse or neglect children would be remarkably challenging for me. A case that I may encounter would perhaps be a client who states that her child was taken to the emergency room due to head injuries, which she and her spouse claims were from accidentally tumbling down the stairs. She later confesses to me that her injuries were not accidental but rather intentional. The client has been abusing her child repeatedly for three years and now feels guilty. As a child, the client remembers being abused by her legal guardian, therefore, believes her child deserves to be abused as well as she has. Although the client felt guilty after a period of time, it would be almost impossible for me to react with anger. I was raised in respecting every member of my family, therefore, dealing with a case of child abuse would be out of my norm. In addition to my own personal belief, children do not have the ability to defend themselves in comparison to an adult. The first statement I would say to the client is, “Your child does not deserve to live their life being mistreated, therefore, you do not deserve her”. I would feel truly overwhelmed by anxiety, disgust, and strong desires for punishment that will interfere with my decision-making. My nonverbal behaviors; such as, mouth dropping, eye rolling, and the loss of eye contact would immediately make my client feel uncomfortable
My family’s Mexican traditions and life experiences played a great role in shaping my individual beliefs and values. I learned to embrace important values, roles, and norms from the Mexican culture. However, the experiences I have encountered throughout my life have influenced my interactions with others, life’s point of view, and the development of having my own sense of reasoning that differs from my family beliefs and values.
The Values and Motives Questionnaire (VMQ) manual explained two types of reliability that they utilized to assess the consistency of the assessment: test-retest reliability and homogeneity reliability (Psytech, 2016). The test-retest reliability assesses compares the scales that occurred at two or more separate testings, whereas the homogeneity assesses if the items within the test are similar in their ability to test the target attribute. (Drummond, Sheperis, & Jones, 2016). The two types of validity the VMQ manual acknowledged wereconstruct and criterion validity (Psytech, 2016). Construct validity is an assessment that tests if the target attribute is effectively being measured. The test needs to reflect meaning and be consistent with other established tests measuring the same attribute. Criterion validity measures the tests ability to predict the target attribute successfully, this is especially important since most assessment are given in order to predict wellness or behaviors (Drummond et al., 2016). The primary reliability assessment used to portray reliability in the manual is the homogeneity. It was reported that all of the scales have a strong measurement, except for achievement and infrequency (Psychnet, 2016). This means that of all the sub-categories that are in the VMQ are asking questions that are similar in their measurement of the target category. For validity, the inter-correlations were assessed. The results indicated that the sub-scales did not directly impact each other and that they did measure the specific sub-scales they were intending to measure (Psychnet, 2016).
As a social work professional, you must take into account your own personal values before you can be an effective worker in this field. Social workers sometimes need to put their own values aside when working with clients who don’t share their same ideals. Clients are diverse and are not going to always have the same values that the worker has. Social workers need to be professional and adhere to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) guidelines when working with any client.
Understanding where one’s natural impulses come from may be difficult to understand without looking at past generations and family history. Knowing that generations before us helped shape our development is important to note. Generational trends can help explain the importance of said values. Through analysis of my cultural genogram I found that many of my core values came from my Mexican culture, despite having had great exposure to values established by the dominant culture here in the United States. I found that my family over many generations regarded familismo, respeto, religion, and work ethic as highly important values. It is important to deeply analyze where these values came from, how they may be oppressed, and how
The values that are operating in my perspective is my experience. I values certain things such as managing my money, preparing for my future as well as my family, getting an education is the gateway for social mobility. I also know the values of the individuals in the lower class of living paycheck to paycheck, there is limited planning, and as it relate to health, they are more likely to end up in the emergency room than scheduling an appointment with a physician. I can ...
In a country as culturally and ethnically diverse as the United States of America it may be difficult to believe so many people from so many different backgrounds could share the same basic set of values. Even if one were to ask any number of random Americans, they would receive varying responses on what their values are. Some may not be able to give a definitive answer. Others could continuously list values without stopping. Although it may appear that there is a broad range of values, taking a closer look one will find that these ideas can be condensed into four major categories. These highly important American values are individualism, equality, competition, and advancement.
Personal Values depends on where you come from, who you are as a person and your culture. Everything we go through and we experience our beliefs all depend on what we have been through in our lives. Life impacts every person from a different perspective and that specific perspective is how you view your life and the things that occur in it. As a future educator I want everything that I am impacted with that involves sexism, racism, prejudice and illegal immigration I will observe and handle with an open mind. It is all about perspective.
There are many different meanings when we type out the word “Values” in the internet. From “importance, worth or usefulness of something” to a “person’s principles or standards of behavior” and “one’s judgement of what is important in life.” (Google) All these meaning have a word in common, important. My meaning to values is what I consider important in my life, simple as that. There are over 100 values in which are all very significant in our daily lives. It is hard to choose just a few values when in reality we all want all of them even if we don’t admit we need it. If I had to choose values, it would be family, happiness, loyalty, honesty, and lastly responsibility.

I am fortunate to have realized my faith in god in early years of my life and experiences in life have only strengthened my faith; I was born and raised in a small town in India and my elementary to undergraduate education has been from a Christian, catholic school, Convent of Jesus & Mary, a congregation established by Mother Claudine Thevnet who wanted to undertake the education of girls in India. It was in school, I first experienced the introduction to Christianity and my family being Hindu resonated a lot of common values being taught at school. Since there was no conflict in my values learnt at school and those at home, these were only deepened and have become an important part of my personality. As a result of my upbringing and my education, memories of my faith are amongst my earliest. I believe in the presence of god and I believe that god has bigger plans for me. My education and my family has integrated values in me for respecting, accepting, understanding other members of the society. Hinduism taught me how to be respectful and tolerant to others, it taught me that I need to understand that I am a human and I am here to serve and help others in need. There have been times when faced with difficult challenges in life and I have followed the path laid by god, ignorance went away and I found solutions and answers to the problems and challenges that I faced.
During everyone 's lifetime, there is always something we hold closest to our hearts; it maybe our principles we live by, values, and even our own beliefs. Values are those things that are very important to us but never really realize how much we actually value them in our life. Have you ever been asked to define three of your main values and rip them up? I have and I never noticed how much they meant to me. Each and every one of us believes in our own personal values. These values are what gives us strength and strive us to do what makes us happy. These values are very important to us and are standards that we live by whether we realize it or not. Everyone has something we value including me. Some of the values I might think highly of,
Family is a value that my father taught me. He told me that family is
Yet, the gauge we use to define these things, or the level of importance they hold in our lives, can be dangerous. Again, what is our value system?
