Have you ever been beaten down by your own confidence? It is supposed to help you succeed, but instead, it once made me blinded from the fact that I am not perfect. There is always a chance of failure if I don’t try my best. In fact, I did fail getting into my dream high school. It was in 2010, when I was still in Vietnam, and coming up was a very hard Transitional Exam from Secondary School to High School, which included a three-part exam: Math, English, and Literature, that all ninth graders, including myself, were very frustrated about. It was the key to open the door to a student’s dream. Because the better the high school you got into, the better education you would get, and the better preparation you would have to increase your chance to get into a great college. For that reason, every student needed to study for the exam with their best efforts. Instead of studying for the Literature exam alone, I had my very best friend, Trang, who was one of the best writers in my class, to study with. She helped me in reviewing the materials and showed me all her best tips in writing a go...
Failure happens to everyone on a daily basis while success only comes to those who push themselves to work hard. There are two types of people who cope with failure. The person who is typically successful does not see any benefits to failing and simply gives up. Meanwhile, the other person will accept their mistakes and see this as an opportunity to better themselves. Failure develops self-driven motivation within students and this ploy can be used throughout the rest of their lives for any situation. For example, the girl who didn’t make the varsity soccer team her freshmen year will have additional motivation within herself to practice harder so next year, maybe she will achieve her initial goal of making the varsity team. Instead of getting down on themselves, students will see any setback they encounter, only as motivation to do better. Nothing is more important than self motivation because it allows students to believe in themselves and know what they can achieve. Once they overcome one failure after another, they know they are capable of obtaining success. Failure will no longer be seen as only a disturbance, it will be seen as simply taking a different road to
I went into my freshman year of high school very insecure about my own potential. Never did I think that I had it in me to be one of the “smart kids”. Fortunately for me, I signed up for all the wrong classes and I was forced to go to a school (yes, McDevitt was not my choice but my parents) that had terrific, dedicated teachers that knew I was taking the wrong course and did something about it. Like in Th...
Failure leads to disappointments but sometimes it can result in great lessons and successes. People can go through hard times, but if they stick it out and see it through, the failures and hard times can lead to success. This happened to me recently involving soccer. It was our second game of the high school season, and we were playing Northeastern. I had started the game and after the national anthem and the announcing of our names, the game whistle had blown, singling the start of the game. The first half went by slow it seemed to never end. With the end of the first half we were tied 0-0. The halftime talk was not very positive, understandably, considering we weren't playing well. Then the whistles blew again and we took the field to start
Like all of us did, “many high school students spend the spring semester of their junior year preparing to take the ACT or SAT.” (Streetman)
The fear of failure is a frequent battle found within me. Often, because of this fear I struggle with self-belief, so much so that I hesitate to pursue something I desire the first time opportunity arises. Usually, I need to steadily muster up enough courage before seeking it.Consequently in some instances it is already too late. Fear of failure impedes my progression and in turn I lose sight of my aspirations. In the novel The Alchemist, the Alchemist tells Santiago during his final task, when he is asked to turn himself into the wind that nothing is impossible: "There is only one thing that makes dreams impossible to achieve: The fear of failure" (141). I find I am able to relate to Santiago in this situation due to my athletic history. Whenever, I try-out for a team I always feel anxious and nervous. "What if I am not good enough?" or "What if I do not make it?" are two questions I ask myself every time. I question my abilities and skills and everything that I have accomplished thus far is no longer comforting. I then convince myself that failure is inevitable and therefore do not bring fo...
My friends and I, hand-chosen by our fourth grade teachers to work with a special math teacher for a period of four months, had been competing in an exclusive contest called Math Olympiad. The Math Olympiad contest consisted of five intensive five-problem tests, given over a period of four months. Among the participants in our school, a score of three or below on any test was considered “bad.” Throughout the four months, I had been working hard, aiming to receive perfect scores on the tests. As the pressure
Honestly if I was to go back in time I’d change all of my mistakes and make the right decisions which are to block out the people that accounted for my failure. Allowing obstacles to bring you down even though you have the capability to overcome them isn’t the right way to go if you want to be successful. In order to be successful you need to learn who to associate yourself with so you can mainly focus on the goals you want to archive to make you better mentally and physically. Having a better mindset is good for obtaining success because you will be able to think more positively about what you need to do. My freshman year could have gone way better if I applied this method to my life which is why you should apply it to yours. Learn from my mistakes and don’t follow the path I journeyed into as a
This quote relates a bad hop that a ground ball takes in baseball to obstacles in my life as well as relating great plays to overcoming those obstacles. This brings me to my laws of life which are how to deal with failure and how to make the best of a bad situation put before you.
In When Success Leads to Failure, Jessica Lahey is faced with a tough situation involving a student, whose love for learning is fading, and a parent who does not seem to understand why. Lahey establishes that parents are starting to teach children to fear failure, and the fear is what is destroying their love for learning (Lahey). I support Lahey’s proposition that kids are beginning to hate learning because children are taught that failure is not an option. In today’s society, many teachers and especially parents push children to only strive for success and to fear failure, which results in many children’s growing hatred for learning.
I concluded my 8th grade year with 9 a's and 5 b's, contrarily my 9th grade report card included 5 f's and 3 d's. "Your mistakes do not define who you are, you are your possibilities." - Oprah Winfrey. This quote reflects my high school journey because though I've made innumerable mistakes throughout high school thus far, and continue to make mistakes by not prioritizing my education, I refuse to give up and I will not let my mistakes make me.
I will never forget my first season of competitive golf, averaging in the upper ninety’s and by the end of this season I was averaging in the low ninety's which qualified me for the first round of the post season. This event was the Mid-Penn championship, held at Armitage golf course.
A time when I experiences failure is when I made the B team for volleyball. From not making the A team I learn a lot of lessons. I knew that if I wanted to be on the A team then I was going to the have to push myself to improve. I knew that just because I didn’t make the team that I wanted to I shouldn’t give up and quit. I also knew that because I didn’t make the team that I want I couldn’t take it out on other people. I had to show good character and prove that I wasn’t taking it out on anyone else. I also knew that I could set long term and short term goals to reach to become better.
“Don't quit. Never give up trying to build the world you can see, even if others can't see it. Listen to your drum and your drum only. It's the one that makes the sweetest sound.” said Simon Sinek. In life people only want to see what you can’t do. Basically everyone wants to see you fail, but if you’re a strong person you prove to them that you can make anything possible. I learned from my mistake that your own family isn’t your real support. I chose the wrong path when I started college, I chose the wrong people and I chose the wrong state of mind to start school. This brought my life to failure, were no one believed in me. Motivation, being successful, and not giving up are ways that identifies my personal
Out of the many people who teach me in life, my dad has influenced me the most. He has taught me much, has helped me when I have had trouble, and is always there for me. One of the areas in which my dad helps me is in difficult subjects such as math. The different types of equations and formulas in math sometimes confuse me. When my dad notices my confusion, he and I come up with a plan to resolve the problem before the next assessment. When I perform well on the next assessment, I realize that he has not just helped me to do well but has made me appreciate what I have learned. It is neither enjoyable nor easy, and I do not do this simply to please him. I do this because I value my education and my own success. My dad teaches me to push through my problems and resolve them -- and not just in school. He has helped me in all different kinds of problems. From making sure I have good, kind friends, to comforting me when I am upset or anxious, he takes a big role in my life. By always being there for me, he teaches me to do the same for others. And above all, my dad has influenced me to comfort those and make others happy. My dad is someone I know who has influenced me through his many daily actions.
“The failure is the mother of success” this Chinese quote said that failure is not the end. Failure is where people learn from their mistake. People cannot be successful all the time. Indeed, there are many people who learned from their failures before being successful. Each failure that people had met is a helpful lesson and valuable experience to help them become a better person.
