Throughout my high school career I dyed a countless amounts of t-shirts. Whenever a tye dye themed football game would roll around, my friends and I would always tye dye a bunch of old t-shirts in my backyard. Whether you are tye dying for a themed football game or party, tye dying t-shirts is always fun and inexpensive activity. In my experience of dying t-shirts, I have run into just about every problem imaginable. For instance, one time I tried to tye dye a polyester t-shirt and all the dye came off the shirt. Now I know polyester does not absorb dye. Natural fabrics like cotton absorb dye more effectively. Hopefully with all my tips and tricks I can help you dye the perfect t-shirt. Tye dying is pretty messy so I recommend doing this outside. The dye will stain your clothes and furniture so before you start, spread a plastic table cloth out and change into clothes you do not mind getting dirty. Remember to wear gloves to avoid dying your hands. First, wash your t-shirt before dying it so the colors absorb better and last longer. Next, fill a bucket with warm water and soak the shirt in the bucket, then wring the shirt out. Then spread the shirt out on a flat surface with the back of the shirt facing up. The most basic tye dying design to master is the spiral. For this design, use a wooden clothes pin or your finger to pinch the middle of the shirt and turn it clockwise to create a spiral. Make sure the spiral stays flat so the shirt forms a “pie” shape. Next, take multiple rubber bands and wrap them around the shirt to keep the spiral shape.
